NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Tennis gave No. 73 Washington State a battle but fell just short in a 4-1 defeat on Friday at Matador Tennis Complex. The Matadors dropped a tightly contested doubles point before picking up a singles win from freshman Elena Goodman.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN and Washington State would play a trio back-and-forth doubles games to start play on Friday. The Matadors picked up the first doubles win when Victoria Santibañez Luna and Cindy Ung knocked off Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom, 6-2, at No. 2. The Cougars evened up the doubles play with a win at No. 1 as Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse defeated Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna, 6-2. The point would come down to the No. 3 court where CSUN's Angela Ho and Goodman and WSU's Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov went to a tiebreaker. Ho and Goodman held a lead in the tiebreaker but could not put the Cougar tandem away with Abouelsaad and Markov eking out a tight 7-6 decision.
In singles play, Abouelsaad registered another Cougar point with a straight set win over Ho at No. 5 (6-1, 6-2). Goodman would notch CSUN's first point with a thrilling straight set win over Markov (7-5, 6-1) at No. 6. The Cougars returned the favor with a tight win at No. 1 as Alvarez Sande beat Turchak 6-2, 7-5. The match would be clinched at No. 3 where Santibañez Luna took the first set but dropped the next two sets to Nakagawa (2-6, 6-2, 6-1).
The Cougars would lead the final two singles matches, but each went unfinished. Tse led Zhytelna 7-6, 5-3 at No. 2 while Kumhom held a 7-6, 5-2 lead over Moratalla Sanz at No. 4 before the match was called.
NOTES OF THE MATCH
ACCORDING TO COACH GARY VICTOR
"Washington State is a class program. They play fair and play right. It's all about the tennis. Total respect for Washington State, they are as good a program as we've seen. I felt like in key moments, we lost our minds in certain spots. We're not going to have that again. The discipline in that has to be better, and that's what we talked about [after the match]."
