CSUN Opens Three-Match Week on Tuesday with Two Home Duals

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Tennis returns to the court for three duals this week. The Matadors will host two matches on Tuesday at Matador Tennis Complex against Chaminade at 12:30 p.m. and Westmont College at 3 p.m. CSUN wraps up the week with a Big West match on the road against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at noon.
FIRST SERVE
This week's home duals are the final home non-conference matches of the season. CSUN will complete the non-conference schedule on the road next week against No. 16 UCLA on April 3 and Pacific on April 6.
The Matadors will look to keep their unbeaten Big West record intact when they travel to Cal State Fullerton this weekend. The Matadors are among three unbeaten teams in Big West play this season with Hawai'i (4-0) and No. 56 UC Santa Barbara (1-0) also with spotless records.
LAST TIME OUT
The Matadors bounced back from just their second loss of the season to No. 73 Washington State last Friday (4-1) to notch a 5-2 victory over UC Irvine on the road last Sunday. CSUN pulled out the doubles point with the tandems of Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna and Angela Ho and Elena Goodman winning their doubles games both by 6-2 scores. Zhytelna went on to win her singles match at No. 2 by a 6-2, 6-2 score but UCI took the No. 1 singles. From there, Ho won in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 followed by a three-set win from Victoria Santibañez Luna (0-6, 6-2, 6-3) at No. 3 to clinch the match. UCI claimed another point at No. 4, but the Matadors won at No. 6 where Goodman rallied for a three-set win (2-6, 6-2, 6-3).
CSUN has opened up Big West play at 3-0 for the second consecutive season and just for the third time over the last 16 seasons.
TOP PERFORMERS
In singles, Emma Moratalla Sanz suffered just her first loss of the season at UC Irvine, but she shares the team lead with Yullia Zhytelna for the top singles record at 6-1. Victoria Santibañez Luna also has six wins as she boasts a 6-3 record. Angela Ho has gone 3-1 since being inserted into the starting lineup on March 4 while Elena Goodman went 2-0 in her first singles action in dual play last week.
In doubles, CSUN holds a team 17-5 record this spring season. CSUN's No. 1 team of Zhytelna and Sasha Turchak and No. 2 team of Santibañez Luna and Cindy Ung are 6-2 on the season while the No. 3 team of Ho and Goodman hold a 5-1 record.
ABOUT CHAMINADE
The Silverswords hold a 0-5 overall record with their most recent match being a 6-1 loss to Dominican on Monday. The team will play Westmont prior to taking on CSUN later on Tuesday afternoon. In 2023, Chaminade finished the season at 0-12. Junior Kylie Ye is coming off a singles win at No. 3 in the Dominican match.
Series History: CSUN is 2-0 against Chaminade in team history. The teams did battle last season in Honolulu with the Matadors coming out on top 7-0. CSUN is hosting the Silverswords for the first time in team history in spring dual play on Tuesday.
ABOUT WESTMONT
The Warriors come in with a 1-14 overall record and look to snap an 11-game skid. Division II Westmont's lone win on the season came on Feb. 23 in a 7-2 win over Whittier. In 2023, Westmont finished the season with a 4-18 overall record. Justie Spitzer tops the team with three singles wins this season while primarily playing at the No. 4. The team's No. 1 Francesca Aguirre had two wins on the year.
Series History: The Matadors have won all 18 meetings with Westmont in team history. CSUN has hosted the Warriors in each of the past two seasons, posting 7-0 wins in each contest.
ABOUT CAL STATE FULLERTON
The Titans are 9-5 on the year with a 2-1 Big West record. Fullerton is 6-1 at home this season with its only loss coming to ranked Harvard on March 12. The Titans are coming off a 6-1 loss at San Diego this past Friday. Mariia Nikitash sports an 8-3 singles record while Natalie Duffy and Seha Yu are both 8-4. The team's primary No. 3 doubles team of Milena Gevorgyan and Yu lead team with a 6-2 record.
Series History: CSUN leads Cal State Fullerton 31-18 in the all-time series. The Titans though have won the past four matches including a tight 4-3 decision last season at Matador Tennis Complex. CSUN seeks its first win over Fullerton since 2019 when the Matadors won 4-3.
