Knight to Compete at NCAA Indoor Championships, CSUN Opens Outdoor Season

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field will send Trey Knight to the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston, Mass. to compete in the weight throw on Thurday. The event will begin at 3 p.m. PT. from The Track at New Balance.

The Matadors will also open the outdoor season at Cal State Fullerton's Ben Brown Invite beginning Friday with field events scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and running events kicking off at 4:30 p.m. The invite concludes on Saturday with field events beginning at 10 a.m. followed by running events at noon.

KNIGHT TO REPRESENT CSUN AT NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
Junior thrower Trey Knight will represent the Matadors in the weight throw this Thursday at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Knight is ranked fifth in the nation in the weight throw and will compete in the preliminary round among a 16-athlete field in the event. In what has been a banner indoor season, Knight was named MPSF Male Athlete of the Year becoming the first Matador in any sport to win a major MPSF award. He won the both the weight throw and the shot put at the 2024 MPSF Indoor Championships. Knight would break his own weight throw school record by tossing a 23.52m (77-2) to take first place while he threw a 16.94m (55-7) in the shot put to win that title. In CSUN history, Knight is the first-ever MPSF weight throw champion while he is the first shot put champion since Joe Hicks in 1993.
Knight previously competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the weight throw in 2022 while he was with USC as he finished in ninth place.
CSUN POSTS STRONG SHOWING AT MPSF'S
Along with Trey Knight, CSUN had two more individual title victories at the 2024 MPSF Indoor Championships as David Phillips, Jr. won the 100m and the 200m events. Phillips had a school record time in the 200m at 20.78 while he registered the fourth-best 400m time at 47:83.
Chase Mars finished in second place in the 60m, posting a time of 6.63 while he was also second in the 200m at a time of 20.80. Guillermo Lopez came in third place in the shot put with a toss of 16.72m (54-10.25). Bryson Williams also reached the podium with a third-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 15.14m (49-08.25). As a team, CSUN's men finished third at the event at 102 points.
On the women's side, Arianna Alexander was second in the 60m with a season-best time of 7.43. Brianna Kelpis would finish sixth in the pentathlon, scoring for CSUN while she notched a first-place finish in the shot put event with a toss of 12.63m (41-5.25). CSUN's women finished ninth as a team with 30 points.
CSUN OPENS OUTDOOR SEASON
CSUN is looking to build off a strong 2023 outdoor campaign, which saw a number of all-time top-10 performances reached in school history.
CSUN returns a pair of Big West title holders on the men's side in Logan Davis who won the 400m at the Big West Championships (46.55) and was named Big West Freshman of the Year, along with Bryson Williams who won the triple jump at the conference championships (49-08.50). CSUN's entire 4x100m relay team of Davis, James Crawford, Christopher Allen and David Phillips, Jr. return this year after resetting the school record book at the West Coast Relays (39.68)
On the women's side, CSUN returns standout sprinters Kaliyah Poston, Arianna Alexander and Jada Reese. The trio were a part of the 4x100m relay team that won the Big West Championship in 2023 (45.33). Reese would come in fourth place at the 100m at the Big West Championships followed by Alexander in eighth place.
