3/7/2024 3:33:00 PM | Men's Track & Field
BOSTON, Mass.---CSUN's junior Trey Knight posted a second-place finish and a new school record in the weight throw at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships on Thursday at the Track at New Balance. His finish at the NCAA's is the best for a Matador since 2008.
Knight capped a historic indoor season by tossing a new CSUN record of 24.14m (79-2.50) to finish in second place in the weight throw. His toss surpassed his own school record he set just 11 days prior at the MPSF Indoor Championships on Feb. 25 when he won the conference weight throw title with a heave of 23.52m (77-2). Knight moved from fifth nationally coming into the NCAA's to finish in second at the event, nearly coming away with first place.
Harvard's Kenneth Ikeji, the national leader in the weight throw, just edged Knight for the title with a toss of 24.32m (79-9.50).
Originally from Ridgefield, Wash., Knight made history time after time during his first indoor season with CSUN. In his first event with the Matadors, Knight broke a then school record in the weight throw before shattering that mark at the MPSF Indoor Championships. In addition to the weight throw title, Knight would win the shot put title at the MPSF Championships with a toss of 16.94m (55-7). Knight was named MPSF Male Athlete of the Year, becoming the first CSUN student-athlete to win a major MPSF award in any sport in school history.
ACCORDING TO COACH JUSTIN JOHNSON
"Trey put together a great series today but saved the best for last. It was a great night, but this night wouldn't have been possible without the love, support and hard work from Trey, coach Lange and coach McArthur. This was big for the program, but I couldn't be more excited for Trey. He earned it."
