CSUN Returns Home for a Pair of Big West Duals

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Tennis returns to Matador Tennis Complex this week to compete in a pair of Big West matches. The Matadors host Long Beach State on Friday before taking on UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon. Both duals will begin at 1 p.m.
BIG PICTURE
After taking its first conference loss last week, CSUN sits in second place in The Big West standings at 4-1 with UC Santa Barbara currently positioned in first place at 3-0. With four remaining matches on the 2024 schedule, the Matadors will play Big West opponents the rest of the way with three occupying the top four spots in the conference standings. After this week's matches, CSUN will face a road test at UC Santa Barbara on April 21 before returning home for the regular season finale versus defending Big West champion Hawai'i on April 21.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN suffered three losses last week, all of which were on the road. The Matadors fell by a 4-0 margin to 14th-ranked UCLA last Wednesday then dropped a pair of tight 4-3 decisions in Northern California to Pacific on Saturday and UC Davis on Sunday in a Big West match. CSUN led in both the Pacific and UC Davis matches including winning the doubles point twice, but the home team rallied each time.
TOP MATADOR PERFORMERS
Victoria Santibañez Luna tops the Matadors with nine wins in dual play this season, all of which at the No. 3 position. Santibañez Luna won both of her singles matches last week including on Sunday at UC Davis to improve to 5-0 in Big West play. Emma Moratalla Sanz has gone 8-2 on the year while Angela Ho, Yuliia Zhytelna and Nicole West each have six wins apiece.
In doubles, each of the Matadors' three primary doubles teams are tied for the lead team in wins with eight each this season, which includes Sasha Turchak and Zhytelna (8-4), Santibañez Luna and Cindy Ung (8-3), and Ho and Elena Goodman (8-2).
ABOUT LONG BEACH STATE
The Beach are 11-6 overall on the year with a 5-2 Big West mark. In last week's action, Long Beach State split its two matches as the Beach defeated Cal Poly 4-3 before falling to first-place UC Santa Barbara 6-1. A season ago, LBSU finished the year with an 11-10 overall record and 6-3 Big West record. Rhona Cook leads the team with a 10-5 record in dual play, all at the No. 1 position while Doga Akyurek and Peppi Ramstedt are each 9-7 on the season. In doubles play, Paulina Franco and Mathilde Tranberg are 12-2 as a tandem and Cook and Ramstedt have gone 11-4.
Series History: The Beach lead the all-time series with the Matadors, 37-13. Last season, the Beach prevailed at home 5-2. CSUN would post its first win in the series in 22 seasons in 2022 with a home 4-3 triumph.
ABOUT UC SAN DIEGO
The Tritons come in with a 6-14 overall record with a 2-5 Big West mark. UCSD snapped a four-game skid with a 5-2 road win at UC Riverside last Sunday. In 2023, the Tritons posted a 10-16 record and 2-7 league mark in The Big West. The trio of Grace Gamal (6-9), Polina Jorniak (6-4) and Sophie Pearson (6-11) top the team with six wins each in singles play. In doubles action, Naomi Nguyen and Pearson have a team-best 10-6 record in dual play.
Series History: CSUN leads 10-1 in the all-time series with UCSD including a perfect 3-0 mark since the Tritons joined The Big West. Last season, the Matadors claimed a 5-2 decision in La Jolla.
