CSUN Knocks Off Long Beach State to Improve to 5-1 in Big West Play

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Tennis got back on the winning track with a 5-2 victory over Long Beach State on Friday afternoon at Matador Tennis Complex. The Matadors secured the doubles point and picked up five singles wins en route to winning the conference match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In doubles play, CSUN got off to a strong start when Angela Ho and Elena Goodman defeated Mathilde Tranberg and Paulina Franco 6-1 at No. 3. The Beach evened up doubles play with a win at No. 2 as Justine Dandonay and Doga Akyurek beat Victoria Santibañez Luna and Cindy Ung 6-4. The doubles point would come down to the No. 1 court where Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna edged Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt 7-5.
Ho secured the first win for CSUN in singles play at No. 5 with a straight set 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Akyurek. From there, Cook notched the Beach's first point with a victory over Turchak at No. 1 by a 7-5, 6-3 decision. Santibañez Luna got CSUN the point back with a win at No. 3 over Ramstedt 6-3, 6-4 but the Beach cut the lead to 3-2 with a victory at No. 4 as Sarah Medik knocked off Emma Moratalla Sanz 7-5, 6-4.
The final two singles contests went into three sets with CSUN prevailing each time in thrillers. Zhytelna pulled out a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Dandonay to clinch the victory for CSUN. At No. 6, Goodman rallied from a set one loss to defeat Tranberg 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 to close competition.

- The Matadors are 5-1 in Big West play for the first time since the 2008 season.
- Santibañez Luna stayed unbeaten in Big West play with a 6-0 singles record to go with a 10-4 overall mark.
- The doubles teams of Ho and Goodman along with Turchak and Zhytelna each won their ninth matches on the season.
