CSUN Visits UCSB Before Hosting Hawai'i to Close Regular Season

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Tennis wraps up the regular season this weekend with hopes of possibly securing the No. 1 seed in next week's Big West Championship. The Matadors hit the road on Saturday to take on first-place UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. before returning to Matador Tennis Complex on Sunday for their home finale against Hawai'i at 11 a.m.
FIRST SERVE
CSUN (6-1) will take on UCSB (6-0) on Saturday with first place in The Big West standings on the line. With a win over the Gauchos along with a win over Hawai'i on Sunday, CSUN would win the regular season Big West title and clinch the No. 1 seed in next week's Big West Women's Tennis Championship. The Matadors can finish anywhere from No. 1 to No. 3 in the conference and will play their first match at the conference tournament on Thursday, April 25.
LAST TIME OUT
CSUN wrapped up a 2-0 homestand with a 7-0 sweep of UC San Diego on Tuesday. The Matadors took the doubles point with wins at No. 3 in Angela Ho and Elena Goodman and at No. 1 in Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna. In singles play, Ho, Emma Moratalla Sanz, Victoria Santibañez Luna, Goodman and Turchak each earned straight set wins while Zhytelna pulled out a come-from-behind three set win.
SENIOR SALUTE
Sunday's home finale represents the final home match for graduate student Sasha Turchak. After beginning collegiate career at Sonoma State, Turchak has spent the past four seasons with the Matadors where she has emerged as an all-conference player in singles and doubles play in her career. With CSUN, Turchak has recorded 30 wins as a singles player and 37 victories in doubles play. As a senior, Turchak assumed the No. 1 position in singles and collected four wins while she has teamed with Yuliia Zhytelna to a team-high 10 wins as a doubles team at No. 1
TOP PERFORMERS
VIctoria Santibañez Luna enters play this weekend with a team-high 11 wins in singles play with four consecutive victories while Emma Moratalla Sanz has posted nine wins and Angela Ho has registered eight victories. On the doubles side, CSUN's No. 1 tandem of Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna are 10-4 on the year and the No. 3 team of Ho and Elena Goodman are 10-2 thus far.
ABOUT UC SANTA BARBARA
The Gauchos come in with an 11-7 overall record and a perfect 6-0 conference record. UCSB were ranked No. 53 in this week's ITA national rankings. Prior to taking on CSUN, UCSB will open Saturday's play by facing UC Riverside. The Gauchos are led by Amelia Honer who has 15 wins in singles play followed closely by Camille Kiss with 13 victories. Honer and Kira Reuter top the team in doubles play with a 10-2 record.
Series History: The Gauchos lead the Matadors 29-9 in the all-time series, but CSUN took both meetings from UCSB last season. The Matadors would also knock out the Gauchos of The Big West Championships last season with a 4-2 win.
ABOUT HAWAI'I
The Rainbow Wahine hold a 9-10 overall record with a 6-2 mark in Big West play. Hawai'i is coming off a 7-0 win over UCR at home on Wednesday. A season ago, Hawai'i won The Big West and finished 14-8 overall. In singles, Nelly Knezkova and Nikola Homolkova top the team with 11 wins apiece. On the doubles side, Homolkova and Ana Vilcek have a team-high four victories as a tandem.
Series History: Hawai'i leads CSUN 28-9 all-time in women's tennis with wins in eight-straight duals. The Matadors' last win in the series was a 4-3 win in the 2015 season.
