
Sprinters and Throwers Lead CSUN on Day One of Big West Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.---CSUN completed day one of the Big West Championships on Friday at Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex. Through seven scored events, the Matadors' women's team totaled 14 points to hold on to eighth place while the CSUN men scored one point and finished eighth.
Katherine Shipp-Davis led the CSUN women with a second-place finish in the discus throw while CSUN sprinters posted five first-place finishes in preliminary rounds with 10 total advancing to Saturday's final rounds.
WOMEN
Shipp-Davis was among three CSUN throwers to score points in the discus. Scoring eight total team points, Shipp-Davis finished with a toss of 48.28m (158-4) to collect second in the event. Amani Britton was fourth in the event with a toss of 46.34m (152-0) to score five points. Treasure Brown took eighth in the event with a new personal record toss of 44.55m (146-2) for one point for CSUN. Just missing the top eight, Myli Level was ninth in the event with a PR toss of 44.08m (144-7).
In the 100m, Arianna Alexander finished first in the prelim round with the sixth-best time in school history at 11.51. Along with Alexander, Kaliyah Poston advanced to Saturday's final round with an eight-place finish with a wind-aided time of 11.77. Two other Matadors posted PR's in the event as Jada Reese ran a 11.89 for a 13th-place finish and Ciella Seals ran a 11.95 for a 16th-place finish.

Poston would take first-place in the 200m prelims with a new PR time of 23.91 to advance to the finals. Reese also qualified for the final round with an eight-place finish at 24.62.
In the long jump, Danielle Irvin took 11th place with a leap of 5.56m (18-3) followed by Zola Grey in 12th place with a PR of 5.55m (18-2). In the javelin, Audrie Reuss was 16th with a toss of 31.99m (104-11).
Charis Wondercheck paced CSUN in the two hurdle races as she was 12th in the 400m-hurdles with a time of 1:06.34 and 13th in the 100m-hurdles with a time of 14.31. Genesis Washington would take 14th place in the 400m-hurdles with a time of 1:07.50.
In distance races, Leann Hamilton took 16th place in the 800m with a time of 2:15.94 while Nicole Contreras was 21st at 2:21.08. Mariah Changco placed 17th in the 3000m-steeplechase at 12:08.05. Sonia Avila posted an 18th-place finish in the 10000m at 39:59.80 followed by Faith Mora in 19th place at 41:36.01.
MEN
Mars led the field in the 100m prelims with a time of 10:30 to advance to Saturday's final while James Crawford also advanced by winning his heat and finishing second with a PR of 10.33. Crawford's time was also the sixth-best in school history on Friday. Also, in the 100m, Tosh Black was 11th with a time of 10.65, Shamil Youngblood was 15th with a PR of 10.70 and Wyatt Wiggins, Jr. was 23rd with a time of 10.82.

Mars took first as well in the 200m, qualifying for Saturday's final with a time of 20.97. Crawford qualified as well, placing fifth with a time of 21.08. Black made the top-10, finishing 10th with a time of 21.64 and Wiggins was 14th at 21.86.

Chris Pitts finished in first in the 400m prelims with a time of 47.39 to qualify for Saturday's final round while De Marq Jaque also qualified with a time of 47.68, winning his heat and finishing third overall. Gabe Martinez was 10th in the event at 48.46 followed by Ehinome Inegbenoise in 14th place at 48.46, Xavier Bradford in 17th place at 49.94 and Luke DaVanon in 19th place at 50.37.

Elijah Ignacio scored a point for the CSUN men in the discus as he finished eighth with a throw of 49.96m (163-11). Tui Edwin would post a PR in the event with a toss of 45.20m (148-3) to place 13th.
In the long jump, Bryson Williams finished in a three-way tie for 10th place by leaping at 7.09m (23-3.25). Jonrich Dela Cruz took 14th place with a leap of 6.97m (22-10.50) followed by Joey Nations in 16th place at 6.96m (22-10) and Tzu-Ting Chan in 19th place at 6.82m (22-4.50).
Zavion Harper was tied for 10th in the 110m-hurdles prelims with a time of 14.52, just missing the cut for the finals. Harper also took 13th place in the 400m-hurdles with a time of 57.90.
In distance races, Ramiro Mateos was 12th in the 3000m-steeplechase with a time of 9:40.60. Balmore Montes finished 14th at 1:57.06 in the 800m prelims followed by Atticus Hall in 15th at 1:57.17. Ja'Patrick Smith was 19th in the 1500m at 4:04.74.

"The sprinters and throwers led the way on day one of the Big West Championships. We had multiple qualifiers in each sprint event, and we qualified five throwers in the discus. There are still a lot of points up for grabs. Most of the events for tomorrow will come down to who executes and competes the best."
