6/5/2024 10:14:00 PM | Men's Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore.---CSUN Track & Field wrapped up competition at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday at historic Hayward Field.
Â
Trey Knight led the way with a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw while CSUN's 4x100m team along with James Crawford and Chase Mars all finished in the top 20 in their respective events.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Knight recorded his best hammer throw toss on his first attempt as he hurled a 74.00m (242-9) mark. He would clear 70.00m on his next throw and in his final toss in the finals to finish sixth overall in the event.
Â
Knight earned his first career All-America First Team honor with his sixth-place finish. Earlier this outdoor season, he won the Big West hammer throw title and was named Big West Field Athlete of the Year. Knight would also collect an All-America First Team honor in his first indoor season with CSUN with a second-place finish in the weight throw at nationals earlier this year.
Â
CSUN's 4x100m relay team of Tosh Black, David Phillips, Jr., Crawford and Mars took 13th place in the preliminary round with a time of 39.30, missing the cut for the finals. The group nearly matched their school record of 39.29 set earlier this season.
Â
With the 13th-place finish, the team earned an All-America Second Team honor. On Wednesday, CSUN made its first appearance in the 4x100m relay event at nationals since 2010.
Â
In the 100m, Crawford cracked the top-20 in the event in his first NCAA Championship appearance with a time of 10.33 to finish 19th overall. His time though missed the cut for the finals.
Â
Crawford was the first Matador to compete at nationals in the 100m preliminaries since Carl Horsley in 2015. The Reseda native was a runner-up at the 2024 Big West Championships in the 200m while he finished third in the 100m at the same meet.
Â
Mars represented CSUN in the 200m preliminaries as he also finished in the top-20, placing 19th overall with a time of 20.59 and missing the cut for the finals. A transfer from Vanguard, Mars competed in his first NCAA Championship of his collegiate career on Wednesday.
Â
Mars, a Chino Hills native, was the first Matador to participate in the 200m at the NCAA Championships since Horsley in 2015. He would take home the Big West title in the 200m last month.
Â
NOTES OF THE MEET
ACCORDING TO COACH JUSTIN JOHNSON
"I'm so proud of our coaching staff and the young men that competed today. We battled through every event today and no matter the outcome I can honestly say I'm proud of each and every one of them, including our alternates for the 4x100. This week has been so much fun. The guys found a way to stay relaxed, enjoy the moment and have fun. We represented CSUN very well today.
Â
"While this is the end of the season for most of the team, we still have a few guys that have qualified for the Olympic Trials here in Eugene in two weeks. So, there's still a little bit more work to do."
