CSUN's Torres and Divecchio Lead the Way at Waves Invitational

MALIBU, Calif.---CSUN opened up the 2024 cross country season at Pepperdine's Waves Invitational at Alumni Park on Friday.
Junior Camilo Torres paced the CSUN men's team and registered the third-fastest 6k time in school history, finishing 17th overall while senior Sakura Divecchio broke the Matador women's 4k record and finished 23rd overall. The CSUN men's team recorded a fourth-place finish and the women's team placed sixth on the day.
MEN
Torres recorded a personal record 6k time of 18:32.4 on Friday for 11th-place points, finishing 17th overall. Cesar Cuevas was the second-fastest Matador on the day, running a time of 18:59.0 for 17th-place points and 23rd overall. Cuevas' time was also a PR and good enough for the eighth-fastest 6k time in program history.
Freshman Darrick Jacob, Jr. made his CSUN debut, running a time of 19:15.4 to post 20th-place points (27th overall) followed by fellow freshman Alec Flores who had a time of 20:05.5 for 25th-place points (38th overall). Kai Smith set a PR on the day with a time of 20:28.8 for 26th-place points (41st overall) while freshman Caden Bazo recorded a time of 20:32.9 to finish with 27th-place points (42nd overall).
As a team, CSUN was fourth with 99 points. Cal Poly won the event as a team with 15 points while the Mustangs' Rory Catsimanes finished first overall.
WOMEN
Divecchio broke the school's 4k record with a time of 14:19.4 to finish with 23rd-place points (23rd overall). Junior Ami Jacobson was the second fastest Matador with a time of 14:35.8 for 28th-place points (28th overall) in her CSUN debut.
Elin Markarian finished with a time of 14:55.8 to post 35th-place points (38th overall) followed by Leann Hamilton with a time of 15:46.3 to finish with 41st-place points (49th overall). Junior Emily Ramirez made her CSUN debut and ran a time of 21:35.6 to post 46th-place points (64th overall).
Jacobson's 4k time was the third-best in school history while Markarian's was the fourth-best and Hamilton was the seventh-best.
As a team, CSUN finished with 173 points to finish sixth out of seven teams. Cal Poly won the women's 4k with 30 points while Long Beach State's Marikay Schwab won the individual race.

"It was a good season opener to see where we are at. I was encouraged with how well both teams competed, and now with three weeks to prepare for our next meet, we are looking to improve upon our performance today."
