#16 CSUN Water Polo Heads to Indiana Classic This Weekend

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 16 CSUN Water Polo hits the road this week to the University of Indiana to compete at the Indiana Classic. The invite begins on Saturday with the Matadors set to face No. 11 Indiana at 6:30 a.m. PT before squaring off with Salem University at 2 p.m. PT. CSUN wraps up the weekend with two more matches on Sunday against Carthage College at 6:15 a.m. PT and UC Merced at 9:15 a.m. PT. All four matches will be streamed with live stats also available throughout the weekend.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN opened up the 2025 season with a pair of victories at the Beach Invite, hosted by Long Beach State on Jan. 18. The Matadors defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 17-9 in the morning game before leading wire-to-wire to beat Azusa Pacific 16-11. Senior Dorottya Telek would pick up where she left off last season, pouring in 14 combined goals in the two matches including tying her own single-game record for goals with nine against Cal State Monterey Bay.
CSUN pulled away from CSUMB with a strong second half, as the Matadors outscored the Otters 8-1 over the final two quarters. In the late game, CSUN stormed in front 6-1 in the first quarter against Azusa Pacific and never looked back. Nine total Matadors scored in the victory over the Cougars with Telek netting five goals and senior Kianna Melvin scoring three. Sophomore Erika Staine played 48 of the possible 64 minutes in front of the cage, totaling 26 saves.
TELEK NAMED BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior Dorottya Telek set another benchmark in her already historic Matador career on Jan. 22 when she earned her fifth career Big West Player of the Week award. Telek had previously set the record for the weekly Big West awards last season with her fourth. Her 14 goals scored at the Beach Invite on Jan. 18 came on 66.7 percent shooting from the field. She also added four assists and seven steals while finishing with 18 points on the weekend. Now in her career, Telek has scored a school record 286 times as she inches closer to reaching 300 goals as a Matador.
TOP MATADOR PERFORMERS
While Telek led the way in goals, 10 total Matadors scored at least one goal in last week's Beach Invite. Melvin was second on the team in scoring with five tallies to go with three steals while senior Helena Sandhagen and freshman Sofia Martinez charted three goals apiece. Seniors Anna Pal and Kate Cornejo also finished with two goals each and senior Tatum Scarry had a team-high five assists. Staine, a transfer from Arizona State, shouldered most of the load at goalie for CSUN at the Beach Invite, registering a .684 save percentage and 8.00 goals-against-average.
ABOUT INDIANA
The 11th-ranked Hoosiers are making their 2025 debut this weekend against CSUN. Last season, Indiana went 21-10 overall and 1-6 in the competitive MPSF. Sophia Sollie has returned to the team after scoring a team-high 57 goals while fellow returner Skylar Kidd had 51 goals. In net, Jasmine Higgs totaled 282 saves for Indiana in 2024.
Series History: CSUN sports a winning 7-4 record against Indiana all-time with its most recent win coming in March 2019 in Bloomington by an 11-10 score. The teams have played two total games ever in Indiana with each side posting a victory.
ABOUT SALEM
The Tigers had a 9-22 overall record last season and 3-3 record in the Western Water Polo Association in 2024. Prior to facing CSUN, Salem is slotted to open the 2025 season against Indiana on Saturday. Salem sports three returning all-conference players from last season in Courtney Repinz (Honorable Mention), Mackenzie Hamilton (All-Defensive Team) and Emily Low (All-Freshman Team).
Series History: The Matadors are 1-0 against Salem in team history with that meeting occurring in March 2019. CSUN won by a 13-7 score.
ABOUT CARTHAGE COLLEGE
In 2024, Carthage went 5-14 overall and 3-6 in the CWPA. The Firebirds have returned top scorers Brenna Carstens and Yamila Areizaga, which scored 18 and 16 goals, respectively last season. Carthage will open up the Indiana Classic and its season by taking on UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
Series History: CSUN holds a 2-0 edge over Carthage College in water polo. The teams last played in March 2023 with the Matadors picking up a 14-3 victory.
ABOUT UC MERCED
The Bobcats are 0-2 on the season after dropping a pair of matches at UC Santa Barbara last week. Last season, UC Merced went 4-23 overall but had the opportunity to play in the NAIA West Invitational where it won the first ever California Pacific Conference title. Viviana Luna had two of the team's six total goals last week against the Gauchos.
Series History: CSUN and UC Merced will meet for the first-ever time in water polo on Sunday.
