Goals from Grace Klingler and Nicola Tryner kept Indiana in front despite two goals from Melvin and another from Telek late in the third period. CSUN outscored Indiana 5-4 in the third period, but still looked up at a 15-10 deficit heading to the fourth quarter. In the final eight minutes, CSUN went cold from the field while Indiana scored early to put the game away. Kidd and Sollie each added goals, to finish with five and four, respectively, as the Hoosiers outscored the Matadors 4-0 in the final period.
SALEM MATCH
It would be a physical match with Salem with 25 total exclusions called including 18 on the Matadors. CSUN would take a 2-0 lead at the start with Pal and Telek connecting in the early moments of the game. After a Salem tally, CSUN answered with back-to-back goals from Sandhagen and Telek, with the latter scoring on a five-meter penalty. The final 1:44 of the first period saw four goals with each side scoring twice as Sandhagen provided both scores to help CSUN to a 6-3 lead. The Matadors took control though in the second period, netting the first four goals, all of which from different players. Melvin, Telek, Pal and Sandhagen each scored during that stretch to grow a 10-3 lead. Salem was held to just one tally in the second period while CSUN scored four unanswered to close the period as Sandhagen hit two more, Telek made one and Martinez scored as well.
CSUN took a 14-4 lead into the second half, but attrition would begin to creep down the stretch of the match. The Matadors lost Pal, Nicole Bacoyanis, Sofia Martinez all to three exclusions in the second half. Salem would fight its way back in the third period, scoring four of the first five goals to start. Melvin though stopped the uprising with a goal while Lucie Lapuz added two late goals to extend the lead back to 18-8 through 24 minutes. The Tigers opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back strikes before Telek hit the net on a power play. CSUN surrendered five goals in the final eight minutes, but the lead would be too much for Salem to overcome. Telek notched her sixth goal of the match in the final minute on another 6-on-5 possession.
NOTES OF THE MATCH
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Tough start to the tournament spotting Indiana five goals in the first quarter. We were able to cut the lead to four a few times, but our inability to protect the ball and finish open opportunities cost us in the game. Short turnaround before tonight's game, so we'll watch film and fix our mistakes before competing tonight against Salem.
"One of the most physical games I've ever been a part of, but our team rose to the occasion and matched the intensity throughout the first half. This was a nice win early in the season for us, showing we do have the ability to bounce back after the morning. Big contributions from the roster on both the offensive and defensive unit."
