BLOOMINGTON, Ind.---No. 16 CSUN Water Polo finished 3-1 at the Indiana Classic after picking up two victories on Sunday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Matadors opened the day by defeating Carthage College 21-3 before knocking off UC Merced 21-8. Senior center Dorottya Telek reached 300 career goals after an eight-goal performance against UC Merced.Â
CARTHAGE MATCH
CSUN got off to a slow start in the morning match with Carthage as the Matadors were scoreless for the first three-plus minutes. The Firebirds would strike first on a goal from Grace Steinberg with 5:01 on the clock before the Matadors finally got going on a quick strike from Jessica Matkovich. Nicole Bacoyanis followed with back-to-back goals, and both Kate Cornejo and Alexis Smith added tallies in the final minute of the first quarter for a 5-1 lead. From there, the Matadors' defense finally took control, holding the Firebirds without a goal for the entire second period. Meanwhile, the Matadors picked up contributions from several players, as Lucie Lapuz, Alexis Smith and Bacoyanis pushed the lead to 8-1 at intermission.
Cornejo added to the lead with a goal off a power play to open the third quarter while Wood added back-to-back tallies of her own. In what would be a career day for Bacoyanis, the senior scored twice more in the third period to extend the lead even further. Carthage ended a near 20-minute dry spell with a goal with 1:36 left in the third quarter, but Smith quickly got that goal back on the next CSUN possession. The Matadors would take a 14-2 lead to the fourth quarter. In the final stanza, Telek hit her first goal of the match while Helena Sandhagen got into the scoring act with her own tally. Wood picked up two more goals and Bacoyanis netted her sixth and seventh goals of the match. Smith closed a seven-goal fourth quarter with CSUN's 21st score of the match with 16 seconds remaining.
UC MERCED MATCH
CSUN faced more of a battle in the afternoon match but still led from start to finish. Telek would reach her 300-goal milestone in the first quarter as she scored her 299th and 300th to quickly give CSUN a 2-0 lead. The Bobcats cut the lead in half on a power play before Telek earned a five-meter penalty and found the net once more. After a Kianna Melvin tally, Telek scored her fourth already of the match and Lapuz netted a goal on a 6-on-5 chance as CSUN led 6-2 through eight minutes. In the second quarter, UC Merced though fought it way back into the match, scoring three of the first four goals to pull to within 7-5. However, the Matadors ended the first half with a buzzer beater from Anna Pal for an 8-5 advantage.
The Matadors took control in the third period with their biggest offensive quarter of the day. Telek and Sandhagen each hit the net in the opening minute while Sandhagen scored again at the 4:18 mark for an 11-5 lead. Claudette Asenjo scored UC Merced's lone tally of the third quarter before CSUN scored the next five goals with Lapuz hitting two and the trio of Telek, Pal and Melvin scoring one apiece. CSUN opened the fourth quarter ahead 16-6 but kept up its scoring ways over the last eight minutes, Pal and Melvin each added to their goal totals while Telek registered her eighth goal of the match. The Bobcats picked up two scores in the fourth but it was not nearly enough to catch the Matadors. Wood would scored on a penalty shot down the stretch and Pal closed the scoring for a 21-8 victory.
NOTES OF THE MATCHES
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Twenty-one goals was a great showing for us on the offensive end [against UC Merced]. It was good to see us execute a game plan and make halftime adjustments, something we were struggling with earlier in the weekend. 3-1 on the weekend and overall a successful tournament."
