#17 CSUN Water Polo Returns to Action at Cal Lutheran Invite

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 17 CSUN Water Polo returns to action on Saturday at the Cal Lutheran Invitational. The Matadors will play two matches on the day starting against host Cal Lutheran at 9 a.m.. The day closes with a match against Azusa Pacific at 11 a.m. Live video will be available via FloSwimming through a membership while live stats will also be provided.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, CSUN made the trip to the Indiana Classic in Blooming, Ind. The Matadors came away with three wins in four matches with CSUN's only loss coming to No. 11 ranked Indiana by a 19-10 score on Jan. 25. CSUN bounced back with a high-scoring 20-13 victory over Salem University later in the day with seniors Dorottya Telek and Helena Sandhagen scoring six goals apiece. A day later, the Matadors picked up back-to-back double-digit victories over Carthage College (21-3) and UC Merced (21-8). Senior Nicole Bacoyanis led the way against Carthage, totaling a career-high seven goals while Marin Byars racked up nine saves with only three goals allowed. Telek posted a team-high eight goals, one shy of a career high, in the win over UC Merced with senior Anna Pal adding four goals.
TELEK REACHES 300
Another career milestone was reached by Dorottya Telek last week in Indiana when she hit 300 career goals in the win over UC Merced. Telek, who already owns CSUN's all-time career goal record, has now scored 306 times in her storied Matador career, which is 77 goals higher than second place in school history. Last season, Telek set a new school record for goals in a match with nine while she also has the single season record of 101 tallies set in 2023.
TOP MATADOR PERFORMERS
CSUN's Dorottya Telek is off to a red-hot start to the season, netting 34 goals through six matches while she has 43 points, 11 steals and nine assists. Two others have reached double digits in goals this season as Helena Sandhagen has 13 goals (with 15 points) and Kianna Melvin has 12 goals (with 15 points). Anna Pal, who led CSUN in points last season, has 25 points on the season to go with a team-high 16 assists and 11 steals. Along with Pal, Tatum Scarry has been one of the team's top distributors, totaling 11 assists this season.
In the cage, Erika Staine has shouldered most of the load at goalie thus far this year, as she has 43 saves to go with an 11.14 goals-against-average.
SCOUTING CAL LUTHERAN
The Regals are 0-4 on the season with all of their losses coming against top-25 teams. A season ago, Cal Lutheran had an 11-18 overall record. Currently, the team is ranked this week No. 4 in the Division II national poll. Bethany Metcalfe tops Cal Lutheran in goals with 10 while Katie Knight has six tallies. Five goalies have seen action this season for the Regals with Izzy de Souza topping the team at 12 saves in 40 minutes of action.
Series History: CSUN is 10-0 against Cal Lutheran in team history after picking up a pair of wins last season over the Regals. Both matches were very competitive with the Matadors coming out on top 10-7 and 13-7. CSUN has won six of 10 meetings on the road in the series.

The Cougars hold a 1-5 overall record with their lone win coming against La Salle by a 15-12 score. A season ago, Azusa Pacific went 16-13 overall. Audrey Dexter tops the Cougars with 13 goals to go with six assists on the year while Jessie Nelson has 11 goals and two assists. Alexandra Akritidou has racked up a team-high 11 assists to go with nine goals.
Series History: The Matadors have won all 16 meetings with the Cougars in team history. The teams played earlier this season on Jan. 18 at the Beach Invite with CSUN claiming a 16-11 victory.
