THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.---No. 17 CSUN Water Polo collected two victories on Saturday morning at the Cal Lutheran Invite. The Matadors knocked off host Cal Lutheran in the early game, 19-8, before downing Azusa Pacific 17-11 to run their win streak to five.

Â
CAL LUTHERAN GAME

Cal Lutheran though remained within striking distance with tallies from Chloe Gardhouse and Miranda Miller. Melvin added her second goal of the first quarter off a power play as CSUN led 3-2 after eight minutes. The Matadors would take control in the second period, holding the Regals without a goal over the entire quarter. Pal stretched the lead to 4-2 at the 4:43 mark before CSUN earned a penalty shot, which was scored by Sandhagen. Melvin completed the hat trick soon after and Sandhagen added one more goal for a 7-2 lead at intermission.
Â
Telek netted her first goal of the match at the 7:45 mark of the third quarter, but Cal Lutheran picked up back-to-back scores to pull to within 8-4. CSUN turned to its Hungarian duo of Telek and Pal with the next three goals coming from the tandem. A Miller goal cut the lead to six, but Telek closed the period with another tally for an 12-5 lead through 24 minutes. A total of 10 goals would be scored in the fourth quarter with the Matadors posting a game-high seven. Melvin scored her fourth of the day in the final period while Pal began a 6-0 run for CSUN to close the match. The group of Sandhagen, Telek, Nicole Bacoyanis and Abigel Kiss each checked in with goals to help CSUN to the victory.
Â
AZUSA PACIFIC GAME
The Matadors jumped on the Cougars at the outset with Telek setting the tone with three consecutive goals. Pal gave CSUN a 4-0 lead on a five-meter penalty at the 2:57 mark before Azusa Pacific finally got on the scoreboard on its next possession. The final 1:48 of the first quarter would be a wild one with each side scoring twice. Tatum Scarry and Valeria Martinez each scored in that span to help CSUN to a 6-3 lead through one period. In a similar fashion to the first quarter, the Matadors opened the next period with three consecutive goals with Bacoyanis, Telek and Martinez each striking the net. Azusa Pacific would claw back to within 9-5 on back-to-back tallies from Jessie Nelson, but Scarry beat the halftime buzzer for a 10-5 lead.
Â
The second half began with back-to-back five-meter penalties drawn by CSUN. Telek and Pal each scored on the free shots before Scarry added one more for a 13-5 lead with 5:59 on the clock. The Cougars would fight back with three tallies over the final 4:20 of the third quarter, but CSUN still maintained a 14-8 lead. In the final quarter, the Matadors would continue to receive key contributions from up and down their roster with Scarry and Mackenzie Wood each notching goals. Sandhagen found the net as well to stretch the lead further to 17-9 lead. Despite a pair of late tallies from Azusa Pacific, CSUN secured the victory in the final moments.
Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"A little bit of a slow start only leading by one at the end of the first quarter, but we showed good maturity and kept our poise to increase the lead in the second and third quarters. Few adjustments we'll need to make before the next game with a short turnaround and only an hour break, it will be a good test of our conditioning.
Â
"APU plays an aggressive style that is high risk and high reward on defense, and we were able to expose it and get some easy goals early in the game. From there, I thought we got good contributions from our bench and it really showed some growth today. Overall, a good day for this group."
