11/18/2025 2:06:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif --- The CSUN women's basketball team (2-1) will hit the road again as the Matadors take on the California Baptist Lancers (4-0) at the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center, Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. The game will be livestreamed on ESPN+.
Â
ABOUT LAST WEEK
The Matadors played only one game last week and fell to the San Diego State Aztecs by a score of 91-70 on the road at Viejas Arena Wednesday night. Rita Nazario led all CSUN scorers with 16 points. Nadia Bernard added 10 of her own in the defeat.Â
Â
CSUN got out to an early 13-8 lead thanks in part to consecutive three-point jumpers from Amya Moody and Morgan Edwards. Erika Aspajo had a three as well in the early going. CSUN would reach its biggest lead of the quarter at 19-13 with 1:41 left after Kelly Tumlin drove in for a layup with the help of a pass from Moody. SDSU would then go on a game-best 18-0 run.
Â
Kennedy Lee from SDSU led all scorers with 24 points, including going 7-10 from three. CSUN faced a sizable deficit in the second half, but the fourth quarter proved to be their strongest one of the night and one to build on heading into the Matadors matchup versus California Baptist. In the fourth, the Matadors scored 25 points against SDSU's nine. The fourth had powerful defense and fast offense as CSUN is hoping that those stats are building blocks for the rest of the season.Â
Â
HI, I'M NEW HERE
A total of 10 newcomers make up this season's roster, that's 67 percent of the team. Of the 10 newcomers, six are transfers. In an interview with the Big West during the conference preview on Oct. 17, coach Ned emphasized using the transfer portal to build pieces for a winning program in the offseason.
Â
Using the portal is something that every team does in the new age of college sports, and CSUN has taken advantage of it. The transfers include Jite Gbemuotor (Ole Miss), Maya Contreras (New Mexico Junior College), Mariona Cos-Morales (Rider University), Rita Nazario (Saint Louis), Nadia Bernard (Saint Mary's) and Saray White (Cosumnes River College).
Â
To join the transfers on the squad are four freshmen: Amya Moody, Norret Lewis, Heather Stedman and Jana Canadell.
Â
CRASHING THE BOARDS TO BEGIN THE SEASON
CSUN is currently seventh in the nation in rebounds at 50.6 boards per contest. That is by far first in the Big West. Even more impressive, CSUN is second in the nation in offensive rebounds. The Matadors have 22 rebounds per game on the offensive end. Jana Canadell, in her lone game of the season, grabbed 11 boards in 22 minutes while Jite Gbemuotor is leading the team overall in that category at 8.3 per contest. Nadia Bernard who has started in all three games is leading the first five with five rebounds per game.
Â
