2/8/2025 7:10:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 19 CSUN Water Polo split two matches on Saturday at the CBU Invite at Lancer Aquatics Center. The Matadors dropped a tight 15-13 decision to No 24 California Baptist before collecting a 17-12 win over Chapman.
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST GAME
CSUN would get off to a quick start against CBU, scoring four of the first five goals. Dorottya Telek netted CSUN's first goal on a five-meter penalty in the opening minute. After CBU tied the match at 1-1, Anna Pal would catch fire from the field, scoring three consecutive goals to put CSUN ahead 4-1 near the midway point of the first period. CBU cut into the lead on a tally from Dora Lehoczky, but the Matadors held the Lancers without a goal over the last two-plus minutes to take a 4-2 lead. In the second quarter, Pal kept up her offensive tear with two more tallies to stretch the Matador lead to the biggest of the day at 6-2. However, CBU turned the game around with a stellar final five minutes of the first half. Celeste Almendariz began a 6-1 Lancer run with a goal. CBU evened the game up at the 2:11 mark on a goal from Kyra Kahahawai before Almendariz and Cayleigh Carter scored as well to put CBU ahead 9-7 at intermission.
Out of halftime, Telek earned a five-meter penalty and found the net to pull the Matadors to within one. The rest of the third quarter would be back and forth with CBU staying ahead by a slim margin. CSUN fell behind 10-8 before Tatum Scarry hit the net. The Lancers answered with a goal then Valerina Martinez scored at the 4:26 mark to make it an 11-10 game. Late goals from Pal and Helena Sandhagen kept CSUN close, but the Matadors trailed 13-12 heading to the fourth quarter. In the final stanza, the Matadors would get quality looks but were unable to close the gap against the Lancers. CBU took a 15-12 lead with 4:46 left to play until a tally from Telek brought CSUN to within two. However, CSUN could not draw closer in the final moments.
CHAPMAN GAME
Looking to bounce back after the loss, CSUN faced a tough challenge in Chapman all afternoon. CSUN took a 3-1 lead in the early going with Sandhagen and Telek accounting for the scoring. Sandhagen hit the net once more on a power play at the 3:02 mark for a 4-2 lead, but the Panthers tied the game up with two late goals, each of which on power plays. In the second quarter, CSUN took a 6-4 lead with goals tallied by Telek and Sofia Martinez. However, Chapman rallied back with a 3-0 run to grab its first lead. The Matadors drew even on a strike from Telek, but Chapman again closed the period in strong fashion with tallies from Kate Launius and Alyssa Fricker to lead 9-7 at halftime.
CSUN would dig an 11-8 hole with six minutes left in the third quarter before flipping the game around with strong defensive play. The Matadors held the Panthers to just one goal for the rest of the match while their offense took control. Martinez, Kate Cornejo and Lucie Lapuz each struck the net to tie the match at 11-11 before Lapuz put CSUN in front on a power play at the 3:44 mark. From there, Pal dented the net twice more while Telek notched CSUN's eighth goal of the quarter for a 15-11 lead. In the fourth quarter, Telek scored her sixth and seventh goals of the match to put the game out of reach.
NOTES OF THE GAMES
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Great battle with a good CBU team. We jumped out to an early lead and felt good after the first quarter, but they matched our intensity and staged a comeback that was too much for us to handle today. Our offensive execution was above average, but our defensive lapses ended up costing us the game.
"A little shaky in the first half against Chapman, but then the team bought into the defense and held them to three goals the entire second half. Need to be more consistent as we work into the second half of season."
