#22 CSUN Heads North for Bronco Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 22 CSUN Water Polo (8-2) hits the road this weekend to Santa Clara University to compete at the Bronco Invitational. The invite begins on Friday with the Matadors set to face No. 19 San José State at 12:00 p.m. before taking on host Santa Clara at 3:30 p.m. Competition continues on Saturday morning with the Matadors battling the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay at 9:00 a.m. Wrapping up the weekend, the Matadors square off against No. 23 Marist College at 2:00 p.m. All four matches will be streamed with live stats also available throughout the weekend.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
Last weekend, CSUN made their way to Riverside to play California Baptist and Chapman at the CBU Invite on Feb. 8. The Matadors ended the weekend with a 1-1 record with the loss coming to No. 24 California Baptist by a score of 15-13. The Matadors quickly bounced back in the afternoon to take down Chapman University by a score of 17-12. Dorottya Telek led the scoring for the Matadors with seven goals while Lucie Lapuz recorded her second career hat trick in the win. Marin Byars led the way in the goal with nine recorded saves.
TOP MATADOR PERFORMERS
Telek continues to lead the Matadors in points with 68 on the season. She leads the team in goals with 54 and field blocks with five. Anna Pal leads the team with 29 assists and has netted 23 goals of her own so far. Pal also tops the team with 18 steals in 10 games. With seven goals in Riverside, Helena Sandhagen now has 20 goals on the season and is leading the team in sprints won (25). In the cage, Erika Staine has shouldered most of the load at goalkeeper thus far with 51 saves and five assists, recording a .472 save percentage.
SCOUTING SAN JOSÉ STATE
The Spartans are 6-6 on the season with all of their losses coming from top-15 ranked teams. SJSU entered the year coming off a 9-15 record in 2024. Currently, San José State is ranked 19th in the Division I poll entering the weekend. The Spartans returned three of their top scorers from last season in Darcy Spark (So.), Emma Ruzic (So.), and Renee Fleming (Sr.). Grace Smith entered the season recording 172 saves in 2024 while this season she has fronted the majority of the time in the cage for the Spartans recording 32 saves so far this season.
Series History: San José State leads the Matadors 15-2 in the all-time series after the Matadors dropped two contests to the Spartans last season. Both matches were very competitive though with the Spartans defeating the Matadors 10-8 in the first match and 9-4 in the second.
SCOUTING SANTA CLARA
The Broncos are 2-2 on the season with their two wins coming in a 10-8 victory at Cal State Monterey Bay and a 14-10 win at Fresno Pacific. Their two losses were to ranked opponents in San José State and UC Davis. Megan Chambliss leads the Broncos in scoring thus far with eight goals while Libby Slater and Kate Rodman both have seven goals and four assists each on the season. Haley Tassell has taken the brunt of the goalkeeper position with 27 saves on the season and a .365 save percentage.
Series History: The Matadors lead the Broncos with a 11-2 record in team history. This will be the first meeting for these two teams since the shortened 2020 season where the Matadors topped the Broncos 10-6.

The Otters are 1-6 on the season with their win coming against Ottawa University Arizona. Three of the six losses were to ranked opponents. Autumn Day leads the scoring for the Otters with 16 goals on 25 attempts to give her 22 points on the season. Marissa White has spent the most time in goal recording 55 saves, posting a .387 save percentage.
Series History: The Matadors lead the Monterey Bay with a perfect 9-0 record in program history. The two teams met on January 18th at the Beach Invite where the Matadors claimed a 17-9 victory against the Otters.
