#22 CSUN Splits on Day One of Bronco Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif.---No. 22 CSUN earned a split on day one of the Bronco Invitational at the Sullivan Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon. The Matadors dropped a tight 13-10 decision to No. 19 San José State but secured a 14-10 win over host Santa Clara. Dorottya Telek totaled seven combined goals to lead the offense.

SAN JOSÉ STATE GAME
CSUN jumped out to a 2-0 lead with early goals from Telek and Sofia Martinez. The Matadors picked up two goals from Martinez in the first period and another from Kate Cornejo for a 4-2 lead at the two-minute mark of the first quarter before a tally from Emma Ruzic. In the second period, Darcy Spark evened the game at 4-4 with 4:24 on the clock until Helena Sandhagen put CSUN in front. The game was tied at 5-5 nearing the one minute mark of the first half, but Tatum Scarry beat the halftime buzzer for a 6-5 lead.
In the third quarter, San José State stormed in front with three straight goals to start period. A Nicole Bacoyanis goal stopped the run, but the Spartans answered with back-to-back tallies from Spark. CSUN would have a strong last two minutes of the third quarter, scoring on tallies from Valeria Martinez and Telek to pull to within 10-9 heading to the fourth. The Matadors evened the game on a strike from Telek with 7:06 left to play but went scoreless the rest of the way. Bridget Cranley hit the go-ahead goal before the Spartans added two more to secure the win.
SANTA CLARA GAME
CSUN looked to bounce back in the late match and picked up an early lead on goals from Sandhagen and Pal for a slim 2-1 lead. The Broncos though responded with two tallies in the final two minutes to take a 3-2 lead through eight minutes. CSUN fell behind 4-2 in the second quarter but took control from then on. Pal netted three consecutive tallies to give CSUN a lead before Telek and Valeria Martinez closed the half on a five-meter penalty and a six-on-five goal, respectively for a 7-4 lead at intermission.
The third quarter would feature five goals with CSUN netting three of them. Pal and Sofia Martinez each scored on power plays to help CSUN to a 10-6 lead through 24 minutes. Telek added to her scoring totals with three goals in the fourth quarter as the Matadors never led by less than four goals. Martinez scored on a power play with 2:59 to go while Telek nailed her fourth goal of the match to put the game out of reach.

"We fought a good battle all way to the end against SJSU. As a team, we are improving and it's nice to see but still disappointing being so close to victory and coming up short. These physical games will pay off when we get into conference play.
"Outstanding team win versus Santa Clara. Great contributions from everyone in this one and we stepped up our defensive intensity when it mattered in the second half. Quick turnaround and two big games tomorrow."

- Telek finished with three goals and two assists against SJSU while Sofia MartInez added two goals. Scarry totaled three assists to go with a goal against the Spartans.
- Marin Byars finished with seven saves in the early match with SJSU.
- Pal was the top Matador scorer in the Santa Clara match, tallying five with two assists while Telek scored four times and dished out six assists. Martinez followed up with three goals.
- Erika Staine managed the net in game two, totaling 11 saves versus Santa Clara.
