CSUN Sweeps Dominican University of California, 7-0

SAN JOSE, Calif -- CSUN defeated the Dominican University Penguins, 7-0, in a neutral site contest Sunday afternoon at the Spartan Tennis Complex. The Matadors posted wins across the board including sweeping doubles and winning every singles competition against the Penguins.

HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN won the first doubles bout when Yuliia Zhytelna and Annette Robertson defeated Lorenza Foster-Simbulan and Maria Gavrilov 6-4. The Matadors would then clinch the doubles point when Emma Moratalla Sanz and Elena Goodman bested Sofia Acuña and Deepalakshmi Vanaraja 6-4 to make the score 1-0 in favor of CSUN.

To kick off singles play, Madison Shepperson downed Logan Koitka in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 at court No. 6 to earn the second point of the day for CSUN.Â

"With the way I played in today's match, it definitely helped me build that confidence I've been trying to find when playing under pressure," said Shepperson. "Playing well and getting the win today was a true highlight."

The next bout to finish was Angela Ho against Acuna. Ho won in straight sets as well and by the same score as Shepperson, 6-1, 6-1, on court No. 3. The win for Ho, her third consecutive singles win, put CSUN in front, 3-0.Â
CSUN clinched the win when Zhytelna made quick work of Audrey Rafols, 6-4, 6-3, giving the Matadors a clinching 4-0 lead.

For good measure, CSUN won the final three singles matches played. On court No. 5, Sydney Wilson took care of Astrid Craig, 6-0, 7-5 to make it 5-0.Â

"I had a great time playing Dominican today." Wilson said. "It was a great environment and the positive energy was awesome to be around. I feel like I was able to problem solve and find a way to beat my opponent."

On court No. 4, Moratalla Sanz won the sixth point of the day when she defeated Vanaraja, 6-2, 6-3.

"I think overall today's match was a great match for building our confidence. It was great to get the win." Moratalla Sanz said. "I think now it's time to work on our game and make the team even stronger mentally and physically, we're excited for what's coming!"

And in the last match, Victoria Santibañez Luna defeated Gina Dudley, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7, to complete the 7-0 CSUN win.

- With the win, CSUN is now 3-5 on the season, snapping a four game losing streak in the process.
- Ho is now 7-1 on the season in singles play.
- Zhytelna is now at .500 overall at 4-4 in singles play, having won two in row
- Shepperson now has two wins in a row in singles as she is 2-1.
- Moratalla Sanz and Goodman are now 2-1 in doubles play as a tandem.
- This was the first time these two teams have squared off.
- All but one of the bouts today ended in straight sets.Â
CSUN returns home next Sunday as the Matadors will take on Pacific, March 2nd at 11:00 a.m.
