LONG BEACH, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo dropped a 16-2 decision at No. 6 Long Beach State in a Big West match on Saturday at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center. Helena Sandhagen and Sofia Martinez accounted for the Matadors' two goals on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beach would take control at the start, scoring 22 seconds into the match on a strike from Martina Cardona. Long Beach State added to its lead with a tally from Daniela Quinzada Gonzalez before Jamie Oberman scored back-to-back goals. CSUN would draw a pair of exclusions in the first quarter but could not cash in on the 6-on-5 chances. Two more goals from the Beach to close the first period gave the home team a 6-0 edge. The second quarter would be a defensive struggle as CSUN held Long Beach State to a single tally, however, the Matadors were held scoreless again in the period.
Sandhagen put CSUN on the scoreboard at the 7:16 mark of the third quarter. After being held to one goal for over 11 minutes, the Beach's offense broke through again as four consecutive tallies extended the lead to 11-1. The Matadors would find the scoring column again in the fourth period with Martinez scoring on a power play, but CSUN never got any closer. Four more tallies for Long Beach State over the final five minutes closed the scoring for the day.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"After we settled down in the second quarter, we were able to compete, but their size and speed were just too much for us to match up with. Big week ahead hosting Fullerton on March 29."
UP NEXT
CSUN will return home for the next two weeks with its next match against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, March 29 at noon.
