#23 CSUN Returns Home to Face Cal State Fullerton on Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo returns to Matador Pool this Saturday to take on Cal State Fullerton at noon. Live stats will be available for the match.
FOR STARTERS
The Matadors (15-10, 0-4 Big West) seek their first win in Big West play this weekend when they take on the Titans. CSUN's four conference losses have come against the top four teams in the Big West in Hawai'i (3-0), UC Irvine (3-0), Long Beach State (3-1) and UC Davis (3-1). With just three remaining games in the regular season, CSUN still looks to move up the Big West with matches set against teams just ahead in the league standings. After Saturday, the Matadors wrap up their home schedule against UC San Diego (2-1) on April 5 on Senior Day before hitting the road once more to UC Santa Barbara (0-3) on April 12 in the regular season finale. The 2025 Big West Championship this year will feature all eight teams in the conference and will take place from April 25-27 in Irvine.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN dropped a 16-2 decision last Saturday at Long Beach State. The Beach, who are ranked sixth in the nation, took control at the outset by outscoring the Matadors 6-0 in the first quarter. CSUN would not hit the net until the third quarter while Long Beach State added four goals in the third quarter and another five in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Helena Sandhagen and Sofia Martinez accounted for the Matadors' two goals while Kiana Kellner racked up six saves in the fourth period.
TOP MATADOR PERFORMERS
CSUN enters play this week with four players with 30 or more goals. Senior center Dorottya Telek tops the Big West with 91 goals on 58.3 percent shooting to go with 42 steals, 38 assists and 18 field blocks while senior Anna Pal sports a Big West-leading 62 assists with 49 goals and 47 steals. Other top scorers include Helena Sandhagen with 38 goals and Kianna Melvin with 33 goals. In front of the cage, sophomore Erika Staine had played in the most matches with 16 while racking up 94 saves and a 12.13 goals-against-average.
ALL-TIME LEADERS
CSUN's Hungarian duo of Dorottya Telek and Anna Pal will be wrapping up their collegiate careers this season as the all-time goals and assists leaders in team history, respectively. Telek entered this season as CSUN's all-time goal leader for a career while she has surpassed the 300-goal milestone in 2025, eventually reaching 363 total goals. Standing at 91 goals this season, Telek is 11 away from breaking her own single-season goal record she set two years ago when she totaled 101. For Pal, this season she shattered the Matadors' all-time assist mark, first set by Lindsy Duncan, to reach 204 total helpers. Pal has also moved into seventh place on the Matadors' career goals list at 190 tallies. With 10 more goals this season, Pal would own the distinction of being the only Matador in history to reach 200 goals and 200 assists for a career.
SCOUTING CAL STATE FULLERTON
The Titans are in their third season of women's water polo in 2025 as they hold an 11-16 overall record and 0-3 mark in Big West play. Fullerton is coming off a pair of wins last week over Macalester College (15-4) and Concordia (13-8). Emme Doube-MacLeod has a team-high 58 points to go with 35 goals and 23 assists while Destiny Hernandez sports a team-leading 37 goals along with 20 assists. Goalie Annabelle Sherman has 173 saves and a 10.77 goals-against-average in over 585 minutes in front of the cage.
Series History: CSUN and Fullerton have played twice in team history with each side holding serve at home. The Titans won last season's meeting in Fullerton by a slim 5-4 margin. Two seasons ago would see the Matadors prevail 12-5 in the the teams' first-ever meeting in water polo.
