#23 CSUN Kicks Off Big West Play Hosting #16 UC Davis, #3 Hawai'i

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo opens the 2025 Big West schedule at Matador Pool this week against a pair of top-20 ranked teams. The Matadors first face No. 16 UC Davis on Friday at 2 p.m. before meeting No. 3 Hawai'i on Sunday at noon. Live stats will be available for both matches.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN is coming off a busy 5-0 week, culminating in a win over ranked Villanova in the 2025 home opener last Saturday. The Matadors also won all four games at the Convergence Tournament, hosted by Occidental College and Claremont Mudd-Scripps (CMS). CSUN knocked off Cal State Monterey Bay for a third time this season by a score of 14-8 and defeated Fresno Pacific 22-11 last Friday. From there, the Matadors beat Redlands 18-7 and handed the host CMS a 14-11 defeat on Saturday. A day later, the Matadors received five goals from Dorottya Telek and four more from Kianna Melvin in a 17-14 triumph over No. 23 Villanova.
WHAT A PAL
Senior Anna Pal is on the doorstep of CSUN history this week as the Hungarian native is within reach of breaking the Matador all-time career assist record. Pal has a team-high 52 assists, bringing her career total to 194 and just three away from surpassing all-time assist leader Lindsy Duncan. First established in 2014, Duncan set CSUN's current assist record of 196 assists over four seasons in Northridge. Pal is also moving up the all-time career goals list as her 41 goals this season has moved her into seventh place with 182 over her career.
TOP MATADOR PERFORMERS
Senior Dorottya Telek has reached 80 goals on the season after scoring 15 goals last weekend. A native of Budapest, Hungary, Telek has a team-best 114 points as well while ranking second in assists (34) and steals (38). Fellow senior Anna Pal has racked up a team-best 52 assists and 40 steals to go with 41 goals and 93 points. Another senior, Helena Sandhagen has 34 goals with 16 assists while Kianna Melvin sits at 26 goals and Sofia Martinez stands at 23 goals. In front of the cage, Erika Staine has collected 75 saves on the year with a 10.97 GAA in over 259 minutes played.
SCOUTING UC DAVIS
The Aggies are 9-11 overall and 0-1 in Big West play after dropping contests last week to ranked UC San Diego (15-8) and Stanford (17-11). The team has lost four in a row with each coming to top-20 teams. Gianna Nocetti leads the Aggies with 49 points to go with 27 goals and 22 assists while Maddie Sumner has 17 goals, 24 assists and 41 points. Overall, Bridget Miller has a team-best 35 goals with 40 points total. In net, Eva Stein has 100 saves on the season with a 11.69 goals-against average.
Series History: The Aggies lead the Matadors 24-8 in the all-time series, however, CSUN is coming off a 7-6 win in Davis last season behind a four-goal performance from Anna Pal.
SCOUTING HAWAI'I
The third-ranked Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine are 10-3 on the season with their only losses coming to the top two ranked teams in the nation in Stanford and USC. Last week, Hawai'i split two games, as it fell to USC 14-7 and beat UCLA 8-5. Ema Vernoux tops the team with 43 goals and 53 points followed by Bernadette Doyle at 37 points including 24 goals and Jordan Wedderburn at 33 points with 30 goals. In front of the cage, the Rainbow Wahine's Daisy Logtens has racked up 95 saves to go with a 9.70 GAA.
Series History: The Rainbow Wahine lead the all-time series 21-4 with wins in 10 consecutive matches. Last season, Hawai'i prevailed at home by a 12-4 score. CSUN's last win in the series was a 7-6 victory over the Bows in 2015.
