Women’s Tennis Begins Quest for First-Ever Big West Championship Thursday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- CSUN Women's Tennis is embarking on capturing its first Big West Championship as the 2025 Big West Women's Tennis Championship is this week from Thursday to Sunday. CSUN's first match is Thursday with its first opponent being the Cal State Fullerton Titans. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
FOR STARTERS
CSUN enters the first round as the sixth seed and Fullerton is the seventh seed. The Matadors finished the regular season with a 10-9 record and 4-5 in Big West play. The Matadors have turned their season around after dropping the first two games in conference play to Hawai'i and Long Beach State. During the regular season, CSUN found the winners circle against UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Davis, and Cal State Fullerton.
Both these teams matched up in Northridge on April 5. CSUN came out on top by a score of 5-2. CSUN captured the doubles point while Angela Ho, Elena Goodman, Emma Moratalla Sanz and Maddison Shepperson each won their singles contests.
MOVING UP THE RECORD BOOKS
Counting her results this season, Yuliia Zhytelna is 10th all time in doubles wins with 41. The senior from the Ukraine is also seventh all-time in career doubles win percentage (.672). She has been stellar with partner Madison Shepperson. The duo of Zhytelna and Shepperson are 9-1 on the year. Zhytelna also has played in doubles with Angela Ho, sporting a 5-1 record on the year and 2-0 Big West record as a pair.
Ho, the junior from San Francisco, is moving up the charts herself in terms of all-time players for the Matadors. She is fifth in career singles win percentage (.720) and fourth in career doubles percentage (.723). In terms of singles play, she currently leads the team with 12 singles wins as her record stands at 13-5. When Ho has played at the No. 3 courts this year, she is 9-2. Ho won her match against Fullerton this season, defeating Diana Yanotovskaya, 6-2, 6-0.
CONTINUED EXCELLENCE FOR COACH GARY VICTOR
Coach Gary Victor is one of the longest tenured coaches in CSUN history for any sport. After taking over in 1998, Victor has a .577 winning percentage. He eclipsed his 100th career conference victory this season when CSUN defeated UC Irvine on March 22. He has a current record of 352-260 in his career. Victor has only finished out of the top five in seven of his 27 seasons. He is a four-time coach of the year and has led eight different teams to national rankings.
ABOUT CAL STATE FULLERTON
Fullerton finished with the exact same record as the Matadors this past season as the Titans went 10-9 and 4-5 in Big West play. The best player in singles play for the Titans is Sein Myoung. Myoung is 14-4 in singles and has won 11 in a row. The doubles tandem of Kaytlin Taylor and Seha Yu is the best doubles team with a record of 12-5.
Fullerton is 3-6 away from home this season. The only Big West match it won on the road was April 6 at UC Irvine where the Titans were victorious, 5-2. Fullerton has won three in a row twice this campaign.
Series History: CSUN is 33-18 all-time against Fullerton. CSUN has won two in a row.
