8/31/2025 8:32:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN DIEGO, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer outshot the University of San Diego but could not erase an early deficit in a 3-1 defeat on Sunday at Torero Stadium. Senior Cailey Jackson scored her third goal of the season in the second half while CSUN outshot USD 16-5 after halftime. However, USD scored twice in the first half and added another late to hold off the Matadors.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN would dig an early hole in the first half when San Diego found the net in the 11th minute. After an attempted clear out, the Toreros gained possession, leading to Tamia Graham sending a shot passed Riley Liebsack for a 1-0 USD lead. Four minutes later, the Toreros doubled their lead when Ella Callahan made a strong move down the left side and beat the Matador defense for a 2-0 advantage. The Matadors would play catch up for the remainder of the first half, coming up empty despite shots on goal from Jordyn Canister and Yasmin Azar.Â
Early in the second half, CSUN benefited from a San Diego foul inside the box on a corner kick to get on the scoreboard. Paige Califf would go down in the box, prompting a whistle and a penalty kick awarded to the Matadors. Jackson took the penalty kick and calmly struck the netting to pull CSUN to within 2-1 in the 54th minute. The Matadors dominated the shot count throughout the second half, but CSUN could not find the equalizer heading into the latter stages of the match. The Toreros though picked up a crucial insurance goal in the 67th minute when a CSUN foul led to a breakaway opportunity as Callahan found Katelyn Bessemer for a goal and a 3-1 lead.Â
The Matadors had a multitude of scoring chances down the stretch of the match, but the Toreros' defense held firm. In one of the closest chances, Canister had a one on one with goalkeeper Ilise Medrano in the 84th minute before her close range shot was snuffed from inside 10 yards.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
CSUN will travel to Portland next week for matches with Portland State (Sept. 4 at 6 p.m.) and the University of Portland (Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.). Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.Â
