SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Vanguard (6-10) has dropped six consecutive dual matches since opening the season with six wins in its opening 10 duals. The Lions fell to UC Davis (5-0) and Concordia (5-0) on Tuesday at the Huntington Beach Courts to drop to 6-10 on the season.
Series: Friday's dual match is the eighth meeting all-time between CSUN and Vanguard, dating back to 2018. The Matadors have claimed all seven previous duals, claiming five 5-0 wins, while also winning 4-1 in 2019 and 2021, and 3-2 in 2022.Â
Concordia Irvine (8-11) dropped a 4-1 decision to UC Davis before sweeping Vanguard 5- 0 on Tuesday in Huntington Beach. Against the Aggies, the Golden Eagles earned their lone win on the No. 2 court as Ashley Rossi and Kelia Giusta won 21-6, 24-22. Against Vanguard, Concordia picked up straight-set wins on all five scoring courts to earn its eighth win of the season.Â
Series:Â Friday's dual match is the 19th all-time between CSUN and Concordia, with the Golden Eagles leading the all-time series, 10-8. After the Matadors won eight of the first 11 dual matches between the two teams from 2016 to 2023, Concordia has won seven straight, including a 3-2 win at the Matador Beach Complex in CSUN's season opener on Feb. 20.
CSUNÂ FINISHES 2-4 AT BIG WEST CHALLENGE
The Matadors got back in the win column with a 5-0 victory over Cal State Bakersfield to highlight day one of the Big West Challenge last Saturday (Mar. 21) at Rosie's Dog Beach. The Matadors opened the day with a nail-biting 3-2 loss to No. 11 Long Beach State and closed the day with a 5-0 loss to No. 3 Cal Poly. On Sunday, the Matadors came up just short of three tournament wins as CSUN finished 1-2 on the second and final day of the event. The Matadors opened the day with a 4-1 win over Sacramento State, before falling to No. 13 Hawai'i (4-1) and UC Davis (3-2) to wrap up the weekend.Â
CSUN QUICK SETS
Dylan Hall and Ava Rogers had an impressive weekend at the Big West Challenge, finishing 5-1 in six duals. In improving to a team-best 8-6 this season, Hall and Rogers claimed the only CSUN point in a straight-set (21-18, 21-19) win over No. 13 Hawai'i. Hall and Rogers' only loss came on the No. 3 court against No. 3 Cal Poly ... Hannah Heflin, Maleya Miles, Haley Coggins, and Daysha Halbert each have seven pairs wins this season. Heflin, Miles, Coggins, and Halbert each posted three wins at the Big West Challenge ... the CSUN pairs of Tia Mendiola and Zaria Henderson and Jill Rodig and Ainsley Patrick teamed up for the first time last weekend in San Luis Obispo.
