
Matadors Run Well in Final Big West Tuneup

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The CSUN men's and women's cross country teams completed their final tuneup before the Big West Championship Saturday at UC Riverside.
In the 5k women's race, the Matadors finished sixth behind Rachel Naumann's fifth place finish while the men were fifth as Michael Merchan led the squad in the 6k.
Naumann clocked a time of 17:39.70 to finish a season-best fifth among 59 runners. It was the best finish by a CSUN woman since Elizabeth Nelson was fifth at the USF Invitational in 2015.
Katie Alvarenga was 37th in 18:47.79, Rachael Duriez was 38th in 18:48.37, Jasmine Vasquez was 43rd in 18:58.84, Cynthia Martinez was 44th in 19:02.67, Cynthia Kelso was 55th in 20:04.11 and Bianca Frausto was 56th in 20:19.58.
The Matador women tallied 157 points and ran an average time of 18:39.48.
"Rachel ran great for us today, both teams ran well," said CSUN head coach Avery Anderson. "Lots of PR's today; we ran a good group race and really worked for each other."
In the men's 6k, Merchan had CSUN's top time as he placed 15th in 18:28.30. Mario Ramirez was 19th in 18:34.76 followed by Charlie Nettle (21st, 18:43.08), Manuel Vargas (30th, 18:58.44), Ricardo Garcia (34th, 19:08.56), Santiago Gomez (37th, 19:26.39), James Silva (40th, 19:40.23), Luis Munoz (42nd, 19:42.48), Elias Powell (43rd, 19:49.39) and Christopher Pinelo (46th, 20:24.83).
As a team, the CSUN men tallied 111 points, running an average time of 18:46.63.
CSUN will travel to the Big West Championship on Oct. 29 which will be held at Kahuku Golf Course in Hawai'i.
