CSUN Men and Women Both Seventh at USF Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The CSUN men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2016 season Saturday at the USF Invitational at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
As a team, the Matador women took seventh of eight team while the men were seventh out of seven competing teams.
In the women's 6,000 meters, CSUN amassed 207 points as Rachel Naumann was the Matadors' top finisher. Naumann clocked a time of 22:32.6 to finish 30th out of 94 runners.
Sophomore Katie Alvarenga took 46th in a time of 23:21.4 while Rachael Duriez was 58th in 23:52.9. Freshman Bianca Frausto led a trio of runners making their CSUN debut as she finished 67th in 24:36.5. Cynthia Martinez was a spot behind in 68th (24:44.0) and Jasmine Vasquez an additional spot back in 69th (24:48.8). Another first-year Matador, Cynthia Kelso finished 80th in a time of 25:46.5.
As a team, CSUN ran an average time of 23:49.43. San Francisco won the race with 41 points and an average time of 21:18.90.
In the men's 8,000 meters, the Matadors tallied 200 points led by Mario Ramirez's 52nd place finish. Ramirez clocked a time of 26:00.2 which was just ahead of teammate Michael Merchan who was 53rd in 26:00.5.
Manuel Vargas finished 60th in 26:15.8 followed by Charlie Nettle (70th, 26:37.9), James Silva (88th, 27:20.6), Lugardo Chavez (90th, 27:21.2), Santiago Gomez (92md, 27:23.7), Christopher Pinelo (100th, 27:37.9), Ricardo Garcia (101st, 27:38.9), Elias Powell (107th, 28:03.6) and Luis Munoz (109th, 28:14.9).
California won the men's race with 21 points and an average time of 24:38.73. CSUN posted an average time of 26:26.96.
The Matador men and women will be back in action Sept. 17 as both teams head to the UC Riverside Invitational.
