Cross Country Runs Well at UCR Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The CSUN men's and women's cross country teams competed in their second meet of the 2016 season Saturday at the UCR Invitational on the Ag-Ops Course in Riverside.
The Matador men finished seventh (21st overall) among NCAA Divison I squads in the 8k while the women also placed seventh (16th overall) in the 6k.Â
The meet kicked off with the men's 8,000 meters with CSUN's Michael Merchan finishing a team-best 28th in 25:24.93. Merchan posted his best finish after placing second among Matador men at the USF Invitational in San Francisco on Sept. 3. Also for CSUN on Saturday, Charlie Nettle finished 46th in 26:11.07, Mario Ramirez finished 48th (26:16.78), Manuel Vargas finished 53rd (26:44.24), Santiago Gomez finished 55th (26:48.31), Ricardo Garcia finished 59th (27:05.73), Elias Powell finished 61st (27:25.81), James Silva finished 62nd (27:25.81) and Lugardo Chavez finished 65th (27:34.42).
As a team, CSUN posted 187 points, running an average time of 26:17.07.
In the women's 6k, the Matadors were also seventh out of the eight NCAA Div. I teams posting 251 points and an average time of 22:37.99.
Rachel Naumann was CSUN's top finisher for the second straight meet as she placed 26th in 21:25.79. Rachael Duriez was next as she finished 47th in 22:15.19, Katie Alvarenga was 51st (22:22.05), Jasmine Vasquez was 68th (23:22.58), Bianca Frausto was 72nd (23:44.31), Cynthia Kelso was 75th (23:51.43), Cynthia Martinez was 76th (23:55.84) and Kimberly Newton finished 78th (23:57.94).
The CSUN men and women will be in action again Oct. 1, competing at the Sacramento Capitol Cross Challenge at Haggin Oaks Golf Course.
