NORTHRIDGE, CA - Junior Kayla Yn fired a final round 75 to finish 11th as the CSUN women's golf team wrapped up the fall season with a fourth place finish at the Cal Poly Invitational Sunday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.
As a team, the Matadors posted their second consecutive round of 317 and were able to snap a round one tie with Holy Names and pass CSU Bakersfield. CSUNÂ finished the two round tournament at 58-over 634. Santa Clara (598) led from start to finish, winning the team title by nine shots.
Yn, who had a season-best, eighth place finish at the season-opening Battle at Old Works, moved up from 24th to 11th after carding a three-over 75 on Sunday. Combined with an opening round 80, Yn finished at 11-over 155.
Yn's five-shot improvement from the first round to final round was nearly matched by Michelle Duan who moved up from 24th to 16th place with a five-over 77. Duan was tied with Yn after also posting a first round 80 but wound up two shots behind at 13-over 157. Duan's 16th place finish was her best in four fall tournaments.
Alice Duan, who was CSUN's low scorer after one round, slipped from seventh into a tie for 20th at 15-over 159 following a final round 84. Duan finishes the fall with Sunday's top 20 finish to go with a pair of top 10 showings.
Shenna DeLeon was the third CSUNÂ player to improve from round one to round two as she carded a final round nine-over 81 to finish 32nd at 19-over 163. Brooke Hamilton rounded out the CSUNÂ starting five, finishing in a tie for 38th at 24-over 168 (82-86). Freshman Ashley Phelps competed as an individual and tied for 36th at 22-over 166 following rounds of 82-84.
CSUNÂ is now off from competition until Feb. 12 when the Matadors are back in action at UC Riverside's Battle at the Rock.
