CSUN Off To Solid Start At New Mexico Classic

The CSUN men's and women's track and field teams are off to a solid start at the New Mexico Classic.
Day 1 Results
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The CSUN men's and women's track and field teams got off to a solid start at the New Mexico Classic Friday night.
Men's Recap
Mark Nicolas recorded a career best 15-10 performance in the pole vault to finish ninth. His mark was the fifth best in school history. Logan Cantrell cleared 15-4 1/4 in the pole vault which is now the ninth best performance in school history. Cantrell placed 13th for the Matadors.

In the 400m, Brenden Scott was 11th quick in a personal best time of :50.35. Scott would also earn a personal best time in the 600m later in the session (10th, 1:23.61). T'Jari Packard also posted a personal best time (:50.65) in the 400m which gave him a 13th place finish. Packard's :22.02 was 23rd in the 48-man field.

James Atwell recorded a time of 9:19.14 to finish 14th in the 3000m. Christopher Pinelo finished 18th in the race by going 9:54.41.

Women's Recap
De'Andreah Young turned in a time of 1:33.85 in the 600m. Her time is the fastest by a CSUN performer in the 600m since 2015 (Emma Millard, 1:35.52). She finished seventh in the field of 31.

Jasmine Vasquez lowered her personal best in the 3000m run by 40 seconds as she came home in a time of 10:35.20. Her time gave her 11th place in a field of 29.

Kayla Pickens was entered in the unseeded portion of the 400m and came back with a time of 1:00.06 which put her 14th overall. The seeded section of the 400m is set for Saturday at 12:50 p.m.

"I am extremely proud of the way our student-athletes performed today," said CSUN interim head coach Lawrence Johnson. "They are developing a competitive edge, that we have been lacking. I'm starting to see a little Matador swag…and I like it!"

The New Mexico Classic concludes Saturday. The field events start at 9 a.m. The running events begin at 9:15 a.m.
