
Opening Round 306 Has CSUN Seventh at Big West Championship

IRVINE, Calif. - Sophomore Michelle Duan and the CSUN women's golf opened the Big West Championship Sunday at Strawberry Farms Golf Club with Duan tied for sixth and the Matadors seventh.
Duan fired her low round of the season Sunday, posting an opening round one-over 72. Duan had one birdie on the front nine as she made the turn at three-over. But she was two-under with three birdies, five pars and one bogey on the back nine to finish the day at one-over.
Duan, who tied for the second-most birdies in the field, heads into Monday's second round just two shots off the pace set by Long Beach State's Jennifer Yu (-1, 70).
Duan's sister, Alice is also in the top-20 after one round as is currently tied for 20th at five-over 76. Duan, who tied for the second-most pars on day one, was four-over after a double bogey at No. 6 before a birdie at the par-five seventh brought her back to three-over. Bogeys on the 12th and 13th holes dropped her to five-over where she remained through 18 holes.
Also for the Matadors, senior Shenna DeLeon and sophomore Brooke Hamilton are tied for 31st at eight-over 79. DeLeon tied Alice Duan with 13 pars, second-most in the field but also had eight bogeys on the day. Kayla Yn rounded out the CSUN scoring as she is 38th at 13-over 84.
At 306, CSUNÂ head into second round just seven shots out of the top three. Long Beach State (285) carries a 10-stroke lead into round two as UC Davis (295) is second, Cal State Fullerton (299) is third, UC Irvine (300) and Cal Poly (300) are tied for fourth, with UC Riverside (304) sixth and Hawai'i (308) eighth.
The Matadors and Hawai'i will be the first to tee-off round two Monday morning at 8:30 a.m.
