- CSUN got off to a poor start, turning the ball over five times in the first 10 possessions of the game. Combined with a pair of three-pointers from the Beach, Long Beach State led 8-2 at the first quarter media timeout.
- The Matadors came out of the media break on a 10-2 run that was capped off at the buzzer by a Destiny Brooks' three-pointer that earned CSUN a one-point lead.
- A Claudia Ramos three-point extended the Matadors' advantage to 17-11 with 6:38 remaining the first half, forcing a Long Beach State timeout. CSUN pushed the lead to 24-11 when Meghann Henderson sank a three-pointer at the 3:45 mark.
- After going over 10 minutes without a point, a Jaine Hardy three-point play broke the seal for the Beach with 2:35 to go in the first half. Despite shooting 2-for-13 in the second quarter, Long Beach State outscored CSUN 7-2 over the final 2+ minutes as the Matadors led 26-18 at the break.
- After a first half in which only six fouls were called on both teams, the third quarter saw six fouls being called in the first five minutes of the period. Both teams when over three minutes without a basket before Justina King of the Beach made it 30-24 with 4:43 to go.
- CSUN went scoreless for 3:44 prior to a Channon Fluker free throw. A Jordyn Jackson layup returned the Matadors' advantage to double-digits with just over three minutes remaining in the third. CSUN held Long Beach State without a point over the final 4:38 of the period to take a 33-23 advantage into the fourth.
- Naomi Hunt's third three-pointer of the fourth quarter cut the CSUN lead to 41-34 midway through the period. Coming out of the media timeout, the Matadors worked the ball into Lauren Shymkewicz for layup. CSUN got a stop. After driving low, Hayley Tanabe drew a foul. The Matador point guard made both for a 45-34 score.
- After another stop, a Destiny Brooks drive pushed the lead to 13. Three Tanabe free throws in the final 90 seconds extended the lead to a game high 17 before a King three-pointer made it 51-37 which turned out to be the final score with 48 seconds remaining.
FOR CSUN
- 37 points allowed by CSUN are the fifth fewest given up by the Matadors since moving to Division I in 1990. CSUN allowed 29 at Hawai'i Jan. 17 and 38 at Santa Clara Nov. 30. The five points that Long Beach State scored in the third quarter was fourth fewest given up by CSUN in a quarter since women's basketball went to the format in 2015.
- It is the eighth time in 20 games this season, a CSUN opponent has not scored more than 59 points against the Matadors. CSUN limited the Beach to 21.3% shooting for the contest (13-of-61), the fourth lowest by a Matadors' foe at the Division I level.
- Fluker recorded her 14th double-double of the season and the 69th of her career as she recorded a game high 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Fluker blocked three shots and posted two assists.
- Meghann Henderson, normally the CSUN point guard, moved to the wing in a three-guard alignment for the Matadors. She pulled in a career high nine rebounds and dished out a team high five assists. She also added four points and two steals.
- After turning the ball over five times in the first segment of the first quarter, CSUN would only commit 10 turnovers for the rest of the game.
FOR LONG BEACH STATE
- Hunt scored a team high 11 for Long Beach State, nine of which came in the fourth quarter. King scored nine points and had a team high six assists.
- The Beach struggled with the CSUN size, scoring only six points in the paint. Long Beach State also turned the ball over 15 times, leading to 11 Matador points.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH JASON FLOWERS
- "I thought we had better defensive progressions than we had on Thursday night. We hit some shots early that opened things up because they were really packing it in early in the game. So, our guards stepped up and made some shots which made things easier for Channon. Anytime you come up with a win especially on the road in conference is good."
UP NEXT
- CSUN hosts Cal State Fullerton (11-7, 3-2 Big West) Thursday night.
- Eric Kaback's pre-game show on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health gets underway at 6:50 p.m. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
