NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- The CSUN women's tennis team (3-3) (0-3 BWC) fell in a tough 4-3 battle against UC Davis (2-5, 1-2 BWC) on a cold and windy Monday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex.
FINAL SCORE
UC Davis vs. CSUN
Feb 18, 2019 at Northridge, Calif (Matador Tennis Complex)
UC DAVIS 4, CSUN 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
CSUN dropped a highly contested doubles point to begin the scoring when Kristina Breisacher/Isabella Von Ebbe def. Sibel Demirbaga/Emma Roenholt 7-6 in a see-saw match that could have gone either sides.
The doubles point came down to court No.3 because Skyla Alcon and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso defeated Nikita Pradeep and Shirley Hall 6-4 on a day when Fraile Toboso received praise from her coach. "Ana was the highlight today," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "Even though she got off to a slow start, she stayed positive and focused." Fraile Toboso would win her singles bout against Jessica Walker as well in deciding fashion 6-1, 6-0.
In the singles competition, no team had the clear advantage. After Pradeep defeated Van de Vondel, Sibel Demirbaga claimed the first point of the day for the Matadors, extending her singles undefeated streak to six to begin the season. After a Fraile Toboso victory tied the scoring at two apiece, a Hall victory over Alcon gave a 3-2 advantage for the Aggies. Emma Roenholt tied the scoring by picking up her third victory of the young season, defeating Skyler Holm (6-2 6-2) to have the dual come down to Court #2. Sara Tsuakmoto defeated Jolene Coetzee (6-4, 6-4) in a back-and-forth match that decided the dual for the Aggies.
ACCORDING TO COACH GARY VICTOR
"This was a very disappointing loss. We did fight back from a very slow start in doubles to give ourselves a chance at the point. We have to convert game points in order to win close matches. That will be a priority for us moving forward."
UP NEXT:
The Matadors will take on Southeastern Louisiana Friday, February 22, in the school's first match-up in team history. The game will be at home, 1:00 p.m. start time.
