CSUN Set to Face Cal State Fullerton In Big West Tournament

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN heads to the Big West Conference Women's Tennis Championship this week. The Matadors (14-5, 3-5 BWC), the No. 7 seed, will take on the second seed, Cal State Fullerton (14-5, 6-2 BWC), Friday at 11:30 a.m. The tournament will be played at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.
UC Santa Barbara won the regular season title with a 7-1 league record (13-7 overall) and, as the top seed, will play the winner of Thursday's 8/9 matchup between UC Irvine (14-11, 2-6) and UC Riverside (6-12, 0-7) on Friday at 8:30 a.m.
The semifinals are set for Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the finals scheduled for Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
This is the fourth year in a row in which the Matadors and the Titans are playing the Big West quarterfinals. In 2016, CSUN defeated Cal State Fullerton, 4-3. In 2017, the Titans defeated the Matadors 4-3 to advance to the semifinals, and in 2018 the Titans swept the Matadors to advance.
CSUN defeated the Titans, 4-3 in a hotly contested battle March 16 in Northridge that snapped a six-match CSUF winning streak. At the time, head coach Gary Victor called it "the most important win in a couple seasons."
The Titans are led by Caisey Lee Emiery (18-9) and Julie Acidera (17-5) who hold the best winning percentages on the team. Karla Portalain who leads the team at No. 1 singles, is 12-10 so far this season, while also being 12-7 with doubles partner Sarah Nuno.
CSUN ended the Big West season last Friday with a home loss to conference champion UC Santa Barbara, 5-2.
CSUN ended the regular season with its highest winning percentage since 1998. The Matadors went undefeated in non-conference play while being led by the freshman trio of Sibel Demirbaga, Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso and Jolene Coetzee who have a combined 42 wins on the 2019 campaign.
