RIVERSIDE, Calif - The CSUN women's tennis team (12-4, 2-4 BWC) notched its second win in Big West play with a solid victory over UC Riverside (5-10, 0-5 BWC), 5-2 Saturday afternoon away from Northridge.
The Matadors kicked off the scoring by winning the doubles point in sweeping fashion over the Highlanders. Sibel Demirbaga and Emma Roenholt took care of Tracy Van and Arabella Vallera 6-1 on Court No.3. It was the duo's ninth victory this season (9-6). Roenholt and Demirbaga would also win their singles matches on what was a very successful day for the junior/freshman duo.
"I think we executed very well and finished what we came here to do today." Roenholt said. "We focused on the things we could control, and played with patience and controlled aggression. We as a team have a bunch of amazing freshman who continue to impress."
Skyla Alcon and Monika Van de Vondel clinched the doubles point for CSUN as they won a close bout between Tia Elpusan and Sara Khattab 6-4. "Monika and Skyla set the tone for the day by playing aggressive and sound doubles," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor.
To kick-off singles play, the Matadors would take three consecutive singles matches on Courts 5,2 and 6 essentially clinching the victory early for CSUN. Demirbaga defeated Hanh Pham 6-1, 6-2 to give the Matadors a 2-0 advantage. Demirbaga is now 13-3 in what has been a very impressive freshman season.
Jolene Coetzee picked up a singles victory as well. The freshman from Taiwan notched a straight set win, 6-2 6-1, and she herself is now 9-4 on the season. Coetzee shared her thoughts on the victory for her squad : 'I think we all learned from our past losses and picked up our energy and focus as a team," Coetzee said.
Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso got her 14th victory of the season as she took down Natalie Shamma 7-6, 6-4. The freshman from Spain has only dropped one singles match all season long.
The CSUN freshmen trio of Demirbaga, Coetzee and Fraile Toboso are a combined 37-7 in their first year of singles for the Matadors.
"The freshmen have been outstanding in so many ways. Jolene, Ana, and Sibel share traits that we strive for: integrity, a strong work ethic, love for the game and a care for their teammates." Victor said. "They are a special bunch and we are so blessed to have them together."
While the freshmen have been shining, it can be easy to overlook the importance of the veteran leadership as well. "Our upperclassmen have done an incredible job of making everybody feel welcome. The friendships everyone has made are very special," said Victor.
Up next, the Matadors will play tomorrow in a quick turnaround as they come back to Northridge to host UC Irvine (13-7, 2-2 BWC).
