NORTHRIDGE, Calif - The CSUN women's tennis team (13-4, 3-4 BWC) notched its third win in Big West play, its second in two days and third win in a row overall with a decisive victory over UC Irvine (13-8, 2-3 BWC), 6-1 Sunday afternoon on Matador Tennis Courts.
Following a win yesterday over UC Riverside yesterday 5-2, the Matadors began the day by taking the doubles point over the Anteaters. After UCI initially scored the first tally of doubles on Court No. 2, CSUN won back to back doubles bouts to take the doubles point. The senior duo of Skyla Alcon and Monika Van de Vondel did not let the initial defeat set the tone as they took down Stephanie Hazell/ Danielle Garrido 7-5 on Jim Gorman Court. CSUN would clinch the doubles point when Sibel Demirbaga and Emma Roenholt won a back and forth dual that went into a tiebreaker with Fossorier/Nguyen, beating them 7-6.
"So proud of our seniors today for coming back in doubles and having a will-not lose attitude that spread to the entire team," said head coach Gary Victor. "Emma and Sibel made it happen to clinch the doubles point against a very good team."
After taking the doubles point, the Matadors let that momentum carry them into singles. Van de Vondel got back in the win column when she took on and defeated Stephanie Hazell in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, to make it a 2-0 lead for CSUN. "We have been doing so well lately so we just had to stay patient during a match and not get overly excited," said Van de Vondel, the senior from Belgium. "We have to trust ourselves and let the flow go till the end of the season," she concluded.
The Matadors would add to their lead when Alcon defeated Flora Amiri, 6-1, 6-4. It would be the senior from Hawaii's eighth singles victory this season.
The Anteaters would strike back off the heels of Alyssa Fossorier as she took down freshman Sibel Demirbaga in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.
CSUN would end up clinching the victory when Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso won her 15th singles match of the season as the freshman from Spain took down Jessica Tsukiji, 6-3 6-4 to clinch the conference victory for the Matadors.
Also scoring victories for the Matadors were Emma Roenholt and Jolene Coetzee as they both won close matches for CSUN. Roenholt took on Arianna Tillbury and after they went into a tiebreaker during the first set with the junior getting the advantage, Roenholt won the second set going away, 6-1.
Freshman Jolene Coetzee finished the scoring by grabbing a victory over Stephanie Nguyen in a three set battle, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8. Coetzee is now 10-4 on the season.
"This match had so many similarities to our close losses against Hawaii, UC Davis and Cal Poly. The time, we handled the tight situations so well and got through a very tough doubles point." Victor said. "I am very proud of our resilience through the challenges we faced"
After playing two matches on consecutive days, the Matadors have a bit of a break as they won't play until next Sunday as they take on San Diego State Apr 14. The Aztecs are 12-7 on the 2019 campaign.
