Texas responded with six straight and eight of the next 10. The Longhorns led 52-35 at the media timeout which came at 4:12 of the quarter. Texas' run would end up 22-2 to finish the period. The Longhorns outpaced the Matadors 66-35 as the game headed into the fourth.
Texas outscored CSUN 17-7 in the fourth quarter. CSUN would be held scoreless for almost 10 minutes before a pair of Macy Smith free throws broke the drought with just over four minutes remaining in the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
Five Texas players scored in double figures. Gaston's 19 off the bench was a team-high. Audrey Warren scored 13, Joanne Allen-Taylor posted 12, Lauren Ebo tallied 11 while Shay Holle added 10. Jackson and Rachel Harvey both scored 11 to pace the Matadors. Smith scored nine. For Harvey and Smith, a pair of freshmen, it was a season-high for both. Tess Amundsen added seven and led the team with five rebounds.
As a team, Texas shot 47% (31-66) from the floor compared to 32.7% (16-49) for CSUN. The Longhorns outrebounded the Matadors 46-27. The teams combined for 49 turnovers (28 for CSUN, 21 for Texas) with the Longhorns scoring 41 off the CSUN mistakes. CSUN made a season-high 14 steals.
ACCORDING TO INTERIM HEAD COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"Texas is a very physical team that has guards that put pressure on you for 40 minutes. With smaller guards, it is harder to maintain that (pace of play). We forced 21 turnovers, but some of our mistakes were unforced. You must give Texas credit; they will pick you up and just hound you for the entire game. Rachel and Macy are freshmen playing on a big stage. They gave us some scoring opportunities and didn't play nervous like a lot of freshmen would in that situation. We didn't shoot very well today. You have to give credit to Texas; they make you take shots a little quicker than you would like and sometimes that extra pass will lead you to 6-5 in the paint."
UP NEXT
CSUN (2-3) returns home on Dec. 1 to face Loyola Marymount (1-3). Action on ESPN+ gets underway at 7 p.m. with David Gascon on the call. Texas improves to 3-1.
