NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Needing an overtime to decide matters, CSUN defeated Loyola Marymount 62-57 in women's basketball action Wednesday night in the Matadome.
THE FIRST HALF
CSUN jumped out to an early 5-1 lead before the Lions roared back with a 10-1 spurt to take the lead. Holding the Matadors to 6-of-18 shooting in the opening stanza, LMU led 18-14 after 10 minutes.
Led by freshman Sydney Woodley who scored eight of her 10 points in the second quarter, CSUN tied the score twice. LMU went the final 4:31 of the half scoreless as a Tess Amundsen's jumper in the paint with under a minute to play pushed the Matadors into a two-point halftime lead.

Cassandra Gordon made 1-of-2 free throws with 3:53 remaining that cut the CSUN advantage to three. Tu'ua's jumper in the paint extended the lead back to five on the ensuing Matador possession.

She made 1-of-2 free throws for a 47-46 score with 2:23 to go. Se'Quoia Allmond's layup a little over a minute later returned the lead to the Lions for the first time since the second quarter.
A CSUN turnover and miss led to Kimora Sykes being fouled with nine seconds left. She only could made 1-of-2 as the Matadors called timeout to advance the ball. CSUN worked the ball to Jordyn Jackson in the corner. She missed her three-point attempt, but Kayanna Spriggs grabbed the rebound and put the ball back in to tie it up at 49. LMU called timeout with 3.1 seconds. Allmond's jumper at the buzzer was no good sending the game to overtime.
THE OT

THE STATS

Woodley was 7-of-13 from the field on the way to a season-best 14 points. She grabbed six rebounds made a game-high five steals. Jackson, a redshirt junior, played a career-high 43 minutes and scored 10 points. She dished out a game-high five assists against only one turnover. Sykes was the top scorer for LMU with 12 points. ACCORDING TO INTERIM HEAD COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"We knew it was going to be a struggle. They have played several close games this year, so I wasn't sure how we would close games out. Kayanna Spriggs got the put back and tied it, after struggling early on, the sky is the limit for her. Sydney has the skill set of a starter, but she is more comfortable coming off the bench. She gives us energy and scoring punch. Every team needs that. Tess has a knack for scoring and finds a way to get it done. This was a great overall team effort and we grinded it out for the win."
UP NEXT
