IRVINE, Calif.—A pair of individual championships highlighted the final day of competition for the CSUN men's and women's track and field teams at the 2021 Big West Championship Saturday at Anteater Stadium on the campus of UC Irvine.

MEN

On his fourth attempt of the day, Mathieu Tshani recorded a career best 51-5 1/2 to win the triple jump. Tshani's mark ties him with Johnny Riley (2005) for the eighth longest in school history. He is the second consecutive Matador to win the Big West title in the triple jump (in which the meet was contested).
Ahmed Mohamed finished seventh in the triple jump 47-2 1/4.
Quinn Garity just missed scoring in the 1500m as he finished ninth in a time of 3:52.38. It is his fastest of the season and ranks him second on the Matador freshman list. The school record for CSUN freshman in the 1500m is 3:52.25 which was run by Jorge Castro in 1988. Garity scored in the 800m when he came in eighth by running 1:56.56.
The 4x100m of Jaylon Hartdige, Day'Marr Johnson, Eric Vivanco, and De Marq Jaque finished seventh in a time of :43.28.
Noah Contreras finished 15th (4:04.14) in the 1500m.
As a team, CSUN finished seventh with 22 points. Cal State Fullerton won the team title (163).

WOMEN

Brisa Guzman-Sanchez and Molly Ross of Cal Poly both ran :13.75 in the 100m hurdles to tie for the individual title. This is the third consecutive Big West Championship (that has been contested) in which a Matador has taken the 100m hurdles title.
Kyrasani Mitchell reset her personal best in the discus almost 20 feet when she recorded of 137-3 with her first throw of the preliminaries. The effort just fell short and she did not advance to the finals and would place 13th overall.
Danielle Cunningham improved her personal best in the discus by nearly five feet to 124-1 in the preliminaries of the discus. She did not advance and placed 20th overall.
Sameerah Evans finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 39-5.
CSUN finished eighth (26). Cal Poly (181.5) was the team champion.

"We asked our team to do something that seemed impossible. We started training on Feb. 15 and asked them to give us everything they had to make this season possible. The team did an amazing job this weekend given those circumstances."

Both of them fought off some great competition today and they showed composure and maturity and were able to pull out wins."
