1/25/2022 9:15:00 PM | Women's Basketball
ISLA VISTA, Calif.— UC Santa Barbara defeated CSUN 61-54 Tuesday night in Big West Conference women's basketball at the Thunderdome.
FIRST HALF
A quick start saw the Matadors connect on three of their first four three-point attempts, this allowed CSUN to take an 11-8 lead into the first quarter media timeout (3:59). Jordyn Jackson scored the final five points of the first quarter to bring her total to eight for the frame. The Matadors led 16-15 as the quarter ended.
CSUN held the Gauchos without a point for the first 5:02 of the second quarter as the Matadors built a 19-15 lead. Megan Anderson's three-point play out of the media timeout cut the advantage to one. Jackson reached 10 for the half and was soon followed by a Sydney Woodley basket that allowed the Matadors to take a five-point lead.
Danae Miller's three-pointer with just over two to go created a 23-21 game. Callie Cooper made 1-of-2 free throws for a 23-22 game at the 58-second mark. Miller hit 1-of-2 free throws just before the buzzer for UCSB to tie the game at 23 heading into halftime.
SECOND HALF
All five CSUN starters scored through the first six minutes of the third quarter. The Matadors would earn a 35-34 advantage as the teams took the media timeout. After going scoreless in the first half, Ila Lane posted eight of the 13 UCSB points in the third quarter. Anaiyah Tu'ua kept pace as she scored six. The Matadors were 7-of-13 from the field in the third, but Miller's pair of free throws with three seconds remaining in the quarter tied the game at 38.
Tess Amundsen recorded four of the first six CSUN points of the fourth quarter as the teams remained tied at 43 with just under seven minutes remaining. Amundsen scored six in a row for the Matadors before fouling out with 3:49 to go and CSUN leading 46-45. Alexis Tucker's free throws off Amundsen's fifth foul resulted in a 47-46 UCSB lead.
Lane's layup put the score at 49-46 with just over two to play. Anderson's free throws at 1:28 extended the lead to five. Kennedy Johnson's transition layup off a steal earned the Gauchos a 53-46 score. The Matadors would go scoreless for nearly six minutes before a Jackson jumper with 35 seconds remaining moved the score to 53-48. Miller was 8-of-8 in the final minute of the game from the free throw line as Kayanna Spriggs scored four points while Tu'ua added a basket in the final 30 seconds to make it the final 61-54.
ACCORDING TO INTERIM HEAD COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"We were fouling too much and as a result, there was a huge discrepancy as they got to the line 27 times compared to 12 for us. We must do a better job of not fouling and I must evaluate what we need to do to put our team in a better position of handling screen and roll defense. It was a lot of fun to get everyone involved on the offensive end and they made an assertive effort to play free. We were able to use Tess in several different ways. But things changed when Tess fouled out and it was tougher to score."

UC Santa Barbara was 24-of-27 from the free throw line, compared to 8-of-12 for the Matadors. CSUN held the Gauchos to 35.4% (17-of-48) shooting. The Matadors went 36.8% (21-of-57) from the field. CSUN outrebounded UCSB 36-34, 16-12 on the offensive glass.
