SAN DIEGO--Jaymi Steward and Kennedi Sorensen recorded back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh to give CSUN a 6-4 victory over San Diego State in the opening game of the 31st annual Campbell/Cartier Classic Thursday night at the SDSU Softball Stadium.
Sorensen's RBI triple in the top of the first scored Steward to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead. Mac Barbara tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when she led off the frame with a home run. Vinessa Nunez was hit by a Dee Dee Hernandez pitch to lead off the top of the fifth. With one out, Mikayla Carman recorded her second hit of the night, a single, that advanced Nunez to second. Dani Martinez relieved Hernandez. Alexis Lemus reached on a 4-6 fielder's choice that retired Carman, but Nunez made it to third. Steward flew out to end the inning.
Â
Danielle Romanello was hit by a Kenedee Jamerson pitch. A passed ball advanced pinch-runner, Nicole Siess, to second. Jessica Cordolla doubled in Siess to give the Aztecs the 2-1 lead. Pinch-hitter Shaylan Whatman walked. Allie Gardiner relived Jameson to face Bella Espinoza. Espinoza grounded out to third to push the runners up a base. Barbara walked to bring up Jillian Celis. Celis doubled in a pair of runs for a 4-1 lead.Â
Â
Aaliyah Swan tripled to lead off the seventh. Pinch-hitter Samantha Kwiatkowski singled in Swan to make it 4-2. Pinch-hitter Kaylee Escutia popped up to second for the first half. Carman reached on a 5-4 fielder's choice as Kwiatkowski was retired at second. Lemus singled too short and was pinch run for by Mia Cortez. Steward smacked a three-run home run to put CSUN ahead 5-4. Sorensen followed with her second home run of the year for a 6-4 score. Gardiner retired the Aztecs (5-2) for the CSUN victory.
Â
Steward and Sorensen both went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Carman was 2-for-3. Gardiner improved to 3-1 on the year with 2.2 innings of one-hit relief. She combined with Jamerson on a three-hitter. The duo struck out five and combined for 13 ground ball outs.Â

ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"I think SDSU did a great job coming out and capitalizing on the free passes that we gave them. I'm proud of our team. From the circle, KJ and Allie did a great job keeping us in the game. Aaliyah and Sam got the momentum going on our side (in the seventh)."
Â
"Anytime you can witness back-to-back home runs in a clutch situation is big. Our defense came out and played stellar behind our pitchers and we won our 60-feet battle tonight. It was a great win to start our weekend off against a tough opponent."
