3/5/2022 6:52:00 PM | Softball
RIVERSIDE, Calif.—Alexis Martinez recorded her second consecutive shutout to highlight day two of the Amy S. Harrison Classic for the CSUN Softball team. The Matadors would split two games on the day.
GAME 1
Oregon State scored four runs in the top of the seventh to break open a highly contested game to defeat CSUN 5-0.
A Matadors' error in the top of the first led to an unearned Beavers' run and a 1-0 lead. Mia Stankiewicz would record the lone CSUN hit to lead off the Matadors' third. Sarah Haendiges, the Oregon State pitcher, got the next two outs before hitting Jaymi Steward. A passed ball advanced Steward and Alexa Landeros (who reached first on a fielder's choice) up a base. Haendiges induced a Kennedi Sorensen pop out to first to end the inning.
Alexis Lemus reached on an error to begin the CSUN fourth. Mia Cortez entered as a pinch-runner and moved to second on a successful Kaylee Escutia sacrifice bunt. Haendiges struck out the next two Matadors to conclude the fourth.
Oregon State loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with two outs. Kenedee Jamerson, the CSUN starter, worked out of the jam when Kaylah Nelson grounded out to second. Stankiewicz walked to open the Matadors' fifth. Pinch-hitter Alexis Garcia sacrificed Stankiewicz to second. Haendiges thwarted CSUN as she again posted two consecutive outs to quiet the Matadors' rally.
Both teams left runners on with two outs in the sixth. Jamerson allowed four hits through the first six innings before giving way to Allie Gardiner in the seventh. Kiki Escobar singled to lead off the frame. Eliana Gottlieb homered to left to increase the Beavers' lead to 3-0. Mariah Mazon doubled. Gardiner retired the next two Oregon State batters before Charity Sevaaetasi homered to make it the final 5-0. Haendiges retired CSUN in order in the seventh to end the game.
Haendiges struck out six and walked two on her way to the one-hitter. The Beavers (14-3) tallied eight hits with Escobar and Mazon both recording two. The CSUN pitchers registered 11 ground ball outs.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"KJ (Jamerson) threw well and did a great job of keeping us in the game. We couldn't capitalize when we had the chances."
GAME 2
Behind Martinez's three-hitter, CSUN defeated Sacred Heart 4-0 to conclude Saturday's play.
Steward gave the Matadors the lead in the top of the third when she singled in Lemus. Two batters later, Aaliyah Swan drove in Steward and Sorensen to increase the lead to 3-0. Lemus made it 4-0 in the top of the fourth when plated Cortez with a single.
Sacred Heart threatened in the bottom of the fifth. Kira Ferraiolo walked to lead off the inning. Martinez recorded two consecutive outs before hitting Kylee Harvey with a pitch. Jenna Mowad walked to load the bases. Martinez bounced back by striking out Amy Petrovich for the final out. The Pioneers received a two-out single from Victoria LoPinto. Harvey followed by reaching on a CSUN error. With the tying run on deck, Mowad flew out to right field to end the game.
Martinez needed 92 pitches (54 for strikes) to improve to 5-3 on the year. All three of her complete games in 2022 have been shutouts. She struck out three and walked three. Lemus and Steward both charted three hits. The Pioneers are now 2-7 on the year.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Martinez again gave us a good outing. We were able to jump on the board early. Alexis Lemus had a great day at the plate and did a good job of getting us going."
