GOLETA, Calif. - The CSUN Men's Golf team fired its second consecutive round of even-par 288 to capture the UC Santa Barbara Collegiate Tuesday at Sandpiper Golf Club. The Matadors earned the tiebreaker with the best cumulative, throw-away score to take the team championship over Grand Canyon which matched CSUN's two-round 576.
The team win for the Matadors is their second this season after winning their own Bill Cullum Invitational in early October. The Cullum win was CSUN's first since winning the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Talking Stick GC in Scottsdale, Ariz. in April, 2010.
In a tournament shortened to two rounds due to wind on Monday, GCU's Matteo Cristoni took individual medalist honors after edging the Matadors' Eirik Thomassen and Sacramento State's Ethan Davidson by one shot. Cristoni began the day in 21st-place before firing a final round seven-under 65 to finish at five-under 139. Thomassen, who fired a season-low five-under 67 to lead the individual competition after Monday's round, had two birdies and 13 pars in a round of one-over 73 on Tuesday.Â
After the Matadors finished up a team-low round of even-par 288 in Monday's opening round, the second round today was called before it started because of strong winds along the Santa Barbara coast. CSUN (576) and Grand Canyon (576) defeated Sacramento State (579) by three shots while California Baptist (584) and Gonzaga (590) rounded out the top-five in the 14-team field.

COACH JIM BRACKEN SAID
"It's definitely a positive to know we can win tournaments and this is a huge confidence builder for us moving forward. We got some great individual play here, Eirik played very well again today but just didn't putt very well. Thomas posted his first sub-par round and played great for the second straight tournament. We're starting to play better and I feel like we're in a good place heading into the conference championship. Every team in the Big West is capable of playing good golf so we'll have continue to be consistent."
The Big West Championship gets underway with the first of three rounds on Sunday, May 1 at La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta.
