4/2/2022 9:40:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Kyle Hobus put down a team-high 12 kills but visiting UC San Diego avenged a straight-set loss to the Matadors on Thursday in La Jolla by sweeping CSUN in a Big West Conference match Saturday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Set scores were 25-19, 32-30, 25-22 as the ninth-ranked Tritons improve to 12-8 overall and 4-3 in the Big West. The Matadors slip to 6-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Hobus was the only CSUN hitter in double figures as he hit .259 on a match-high 27 swings. The redshirt sophomore also tied for team-high honors with five digs to go with one block and one assist.
• Daniel Wetter added eight kills (.312), five blocks and a pair of digs while Griffin Walters chipped in six kills (.250), four digs and three aces. Lorenzo Bertozzi also had five digs for CSUN while adding three kills (.182).
• Setter Donovan Constable posted 31 assists, three blocks and a pair of digs in the loss.
• UC San Diego out-hit the Matadors .356 to .244 and had 48 kills to CSUN's 34. Each team had six aces and the Matadors wound up with a 7.0-3.0 edge in blocks.
• Kyle McCauley was one of three Tritons with double figures in kills as he led all hitters in the match with 14 kills, hitting .478 on 23 attacks.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"I felt like San Diego played much better than they did on Thursday and we certainly didn't serve and pass as well as we did on Thursday. I like that we're competing with these top-10 teams but now we have to take the next step. We didn't handle the pressure very well at the end of set two and if we win that set it might have been a different result tonight."
SET 1
The Matadors opened up their largest lead in the early going when Hobus' kill gave CSUN a 5-2 lead. An ensuing 4-1 run by the visitors tied the score at 6-6 when the Matadors put together a 3-1 run to lead by two at 9-7 following a UCSD hitting error. The Tritons would battle back to tie the score at 10-10 and following a UCSD service error, the visitors would outscore the Matadors 6-2 over the next eight points to lead 16-13. A Ryan Ka ace gave the Tritons their largest advantage at 19-15 before a pair of UCSD miscues pulled CSUN within two at 19-17. CSUN was also within two at 20-18 when UCSD closed the set on a 5-1 run to take the set 25-19.
SET 2
The second set would prove to be the difference maker as the Matadors jumped out to a 10-6 lead forcing an early Triton timeout. CSUN maintained a four-point lead at 11-7 and again at 12-8 when three straight UCSD points trimmed the lead to one. The Matadors would again build their lead to three at 14-11 following a Bertozzi ace and would still hold the same lead at 16-13 when the visitors rallied behind a 5-2 run to knot the score at 18-18. The teams would trade sideouts until 20-20 when UCSD reclaimed the lead on another Ka ace. The Matadors would draw even at 21-21 when the Tritons claimed three of the next four to take set point at 24-22. But a Hobus kill followed by two straight Triton hitting errors gave CSUN set point at 25-24. The Matadors would also have set points at 26-25 and again at 27-26 but committed service errors on each occasion. UCSD would cash in its sixth set point at 31-30 when Hobus' swing found the net. Â
SET 3
Needing a win to stay in the match, the Matadors bolted to a 6-2 lead following a co-block from Walters and Wetter. CSUN still led by four at 7-3 when UCSD outscored the Matadors 5-1 to tie the score at 8-8. After trailing by as many as three (11-8), CSUN reclaimed the lead at 15-14 when Constable stuffed a Triton swing. The Matadors would eventually lead by as many as three at 21-18 when Inaki Bustamante came off the bench to put down a kill. An ensuing 4-1 run by the Tritons quickly erased the lead, tying to set at 22-22 and CSUN would not score again in the set, falling by the score of 25-22. Â
