COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"We're close, we just need to be a little better in a couple areas and we'll give ourselves a chance to win tomorrow night. Any of the sets tonight could have gone either way and If we make one or two more plays down the stretch we could have won in four. But we're continuing to get better and we've got to come out tomorrow and be ready to bring the same effort we did tonight."
SET 1
After the teams played to five early ties, CSUN opened up a 10-7 lead on a Hobus kill. The Matadors led until a 4-1 UCI run tied for the score at 15-15. After an Allen kill ended the run, the Anteaters rallied behind another 4-1 run to take a 19-17 lead. A co-block from Allen and Walters would then cap a 5-2 CSUN run that put the Matadors back in front, 22-21. A Gillis kill then sent the visitors on a 3-0 run that forced a CSUN timeout with the Matadors trailing 24-22. After Hobus' fourth kill of the set saved one set point, Gillis connected on set point sending UCI to the 25-23 win.
SET 2
Neither team led by more than one point until a Hobus kill followed by a Anteater setting error opened up a 13-11 advantage for the Matadors. CSUN would push the lead to three at 15-12 when Wetter connected out of the middle before UCI claimed four of the next five to again knot the score at 16-16. The two teams traded sideouts until 21-21 when a kill and an ace gave UCI a 23-21 lead. An Anteater service error would trim the deficit to 23-22 but the Matadors would surrender the final two points in a 25-22 loss.
SET 3
The Matadors would score the first four points of the set and would maintain a four-point lead at 10-6 following a UCI hitting error. Walters was whistled for a setting error on the next point and the Anteaters would turn it into a 6-2 run which forced a CSUN timeout with the Matadors down 12-11. A UCI ace on the next point extended the run to 7-2 and the lead to 13-11 before an Anteater service error and an Allen kill tied the score at 13-13. After the two teams traded service errors, the Matadors took advantage of a pair of UCI hitting errors, the last on a CSUN triple block, to lead by two at 16-14. The Matadors also led by two at 17-15 and 18-16 before the visitors put together a 6-2 run to open up a 22-20 lead. Kills from Wetter and Walters would fuel a 4-0 CSUN run that gave the Matadors set point at 24-22. After UCI saved one set point, the Anteaters committed a service error giving CSUN the 25-23 win.Â
SET 4
UCI would overcome an early 5-3 CSUN lead to lead 12-10 following a Sani kill. The Matadors would get a kill from Allen, an ace from Walters followed by an Anteater hitting error as they re-claimed the lead 13-12. However, three straight UCI points sent the set to the media timeout with the Anteaters in front 15-13. The UCI lead swelled to as many as three (18-15) when a Wetter kill capped a 3-1 run by the Matadors that trimmed the UCI lead to 19-18. CSUN stayed within one at 20-19 and again at 22-21 when consecutive kills by Sani gave UCI match point at 24-21. Hobus' 23rd and final kill saved one set point before the Anteaters connected on their next swing as Akhil Tangutur closed the match with a kill giving UCI the 25-22 win.
