Long Beach State Defeats CSUN 2-1 in Extra Innings

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN and Long Beach State needed nine innings, but The Beach came away with a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at the LBSU Softball Complex.
The Matadors loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first. With the count 2-2, Beach starter Samantha Fowler hit Vinessa Nunez, driving in Alexis Lemus. Alexa Landeros hit into a double play to get Long Beach State out of the inning.
The Beach opened the bottom of the second with three consecutive singles. Kenedee Jamerson struck out Marissa Caballero for the first out. Jacquelyn Bickar's liner to center was deep enough to plate Rebekah Durazo to tie the score. Ashleigh Inae grounded out to second for the final out.
Inae led off the Beach fifth with a double. Jamerson grabbed a Sara Olson grounder, looked Inae back to second, and threw on to first for the opening out. Sinclair Lawhorn also grounded out to Jamerson, but Inae advanced to second on the play. Kyra Snyder lined out too short to end the inning.
Landeros singled with two outs in the top of the sixth. Pinch-hitter Kaylee Escutia was ruled out on a 1-2 pitch, but after an umpire conference, the play was ruled dead and a ball was awarded to the count, making it 2-2. Escutia took advantage and worked out a walk. A second pinch-hitter, Samantha Kwiatkowski was hit by a Fowler pitch to load the bases. Mikayla Carman flew out to right to end the inning.
Bickar worked out a one-out walk off Jamerson in the bottom of the seventh. Inae grounded out to third to advance Bickar to second. Olson grounded out to third to send the game to extra innings.
The teams exchanged 1-2-3 eighth innings. Carman singled with one out in the top of the ninth. Lemus followed with an opposite-field single to left. Jaymi Steward flew out to right which allowed Carman to advance to third. Kennedi Sorensen was hit by a pitch. Sami Garcia grounded out to Fowler in the circle to end the frame.
Corissa Sweet reached on an error to begin the Long Beach State ninth. Lilyanna Martinez grounded out to first which allowed Sweet to advance to second. A Jamerson wild pitch allowed Sweet to move to third. With the infield in, Caballero singled through the left side for the game winning run.
CSUN outhit Long Beach State 7-5 with Carman and Lemus both recording two hits. CSUN left 12 on base while Long Beach State left eight. Fowler recorded 154 pitches in earning her sixth victory of the year (6-4) for The Beach (17-16, 7-2 Big West). She struck out three and walked three. Jamerson threw a career-high 138 pitches (87 for strikes). Jamerson recorded three strikeouts and one walk.

After going 5-for-7 in the Saturday doubleheader, Fowler kept Steward in check as the Matadors' center fielder went 0-for-5…five of the six CSUN losses in Big West play have been by one run…the sixth was by two…Sunday was CSUN's first Big West extra-inning game since May 3, 2019 when the Matadors lost to Hawai'i 2-1 in eight innings…Sunday was the longest Matador game since Apr. 19, 2019 when CSUN defeated Cal Poly 4-3 in 11 innings.
