UCR Edges CSUN 4-3 in 12-Inning Thriller

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—In a thriller, UC Riverside edged CSUN 4-3 in 12 innings Saturday afternoon at Matador Diamond to close a Big West Softball series.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
Max Ortega's two-out RBI single in the top of the first plated Haylee Kela gave UC Riverside a 1-0 lead. Kennedi Sorensen tied the game in the bottom of the inning when her one-out single drove in Jaymi Steward.
Marissa Burk walked to lead off the UCR fourth. Gigi Araki singled to give the Highlanders runners on first and second with one out. The Matadors brought the infield in, and the defense worked as Jantzen Owen grounded out to second to keep the runners in place. A Kenedee Jamerson pitch hit Ally Troche to load the bases. Jamerson struck out pinch-hitter Briza Blanco on three pitches to end the threat.
Kaylee Escutia led off the CSUN fourth with an infield single. She advanced to second on a Mia Stankiewicz sacrifice bunt. Escutia took third on a Chrys Hildebrand wild pitch. Vinessa Nunez's bunt attempt was popped up and caught by Hildebrand. Alexa Landeros lined out to right for the final out of the inning.
Steward's second double of the game began the sixth. Sorensen walked on four pitches as Escutia came to the plate. Escutia hit into a 5-3 double play, which retired Steward, but pinch-runner Ariel Gomez made it safely to second. Stankiewicz worked out a walk before Katie Barbarick, the second UCR pitcher of the day, struck out Nunez looking to end the inning.
Jamerson set nine Highlanders down in a row before Burk led off the top of the 11th with her sixth home run. Barbarick retired 12 in a row before Steward singled down the left field line with one out in the bottom of the 11th. Sorensen singled to right, which brought up Escutia. The freshman first baseman singled to center to drive in Steward to tie the game at two.
Allie Gardiner relieved Jamerson to begin the 12th. Taylor Burdette reached on an infield single with one. Nadia Witt singled to center. Steward elected to try and throw Burdette out a third, which allowed Witt to take second. Lauryn Garwal popped out too short. Kela singled to center field to drive in Burdette and Witt. She took second on the throw home. Burk grounded out to end the inning.
Mikayla Carman walked with one out in the bottom of the 12th. Alexis Lemus walked on four pitches to bring up Steward, who fouled out to left. Sorensen singled to center to score Carman. Maddie Heinlin, the third UCR pitcher of the day, struck out Escutia to end the game.
THE LEADERS
The Matadors honored former head coach Gary Torgeson in a pregame ceremony which revealed a banner in left center field…UC Riverside is now 18-22, 9-9 in Big West games…Jamerson recorded 18 ground ball-outs. Gardiner had one ground out, giving Escutia 19 putouts… Escutia's total is the most by a CSUN fielder since Katie Hooper had 19 against Hawai'i on Apr. 7, 2017...It ties her with Hooper and Scia Maumuasolo (at Cal State Fullerton, 2/13/94) for the fourth-most putouts in a game by a Matador at the Division I level… In addition, Saturday was the longest game for CSUN since Apr. 3, 2015, when the Matadors defeated UC Davis 4-3 in 12 innings… Saturday's game is tied with five others for the ninth longest in Division I this season and is the second-longest in the Big West in 2022.

CSUN (17-28, 7-11 Big West) travels to CSU Bakersfield (8-26, 3-13 for a three-game series on Apr. 30-May 1. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m., with Sunday's single-game getting underway at 1 p.m.

- Steward and Sorensen both registered three hits to pace CSUN. Escutia charted two hits in a season-high six at-bats.
- Kela was 3-for-6 with two RBI to lead the Highlanders.
- Jamerson threw 11 innings, the most by a Matador pitcher since Jillian James threw 11 against Cal Poly on Apr. 19, 2019. Jamerson threw 120 pitches, 81 for strikes.
- Gardiner took the loss, falling to 6-4 on the season.
- Heinlin was the winning pitcher as she tossed the final 1.2 innings for UC Riverside. Barbarick threw 6.1 innings after coming in for Hildebrand, who went the first four.
