CSUN Sweeps CSUB; Matador Pitching Gives up 1 Run

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The CSUN pitching staff allowed one run as the Matadors won both ends of a Big West softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at CSU Bakersfield.

GAME 1
Kenedee Jamerson tossed a five-hitter as the Matadors defeated the Roadrunners 10-0 in five innings in the opener.
CSUN sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the first to take an 8-0 run. Taking advantage of a bases-loaded error with two outs, the Matadors scored six unearned runs. Mikayla Carman and Jaymi Steward each posted a double that drove in two runs.
A one-out CSUN error in the bottom of the third resulted in CSUB loading the bases. Savana Montoya grounded into a 5-2 fielder's choice. With runners on second and third, Alexa Landeros tracked down Cydney Curran's liner in right to end the inning.
Kennedi Sorensen led off the CSUN fourth with a walk. Ariel Gomez pinch-ran for Sorensen and advanced to third on a Kaylee Escutia single up the middle. Escutia took second on the throw to third. With one out, Mia Stankiewicz singled to left to drive in Gomez. Stankiewicz stole second to keep out of out of the double play. The ploy worked as Landeros hit a grounder to Curran at short. She was forced to throw to first to get the out as Escutia scored.
Carman went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI to pace the Matadors. Steward was 2-for-3 while Alexis Lemus scored twice. Landeros drove in two runs. Jamerson struck out two and did not walk a batter. She faced six above the minimum as she charted her fourth shutout of the year and her ninth complete game.
GAME 2
Alexis Martinez threw a four-hitter and did not give up an earned run as CSUN defeated CSU Bakersfield 5-1 to conclude the day.
Kaia Johnson opened the Roadrunner third with a double to left. Johnson advanced to third on a Sorensen passed ball, her throwing attempt to throw Johnson out at the base, went high and into left field, allowing Johnson to score the 'Runners first run of the day.
Landeros doubles with one out in the top of the fourth. Vinessa Nunez tied the score with a single to right to drive in Landeros. Nunez took second on the throw home. Sydney Freijanes reached on an infield single which advanced Nunez to third. Nunez was thrown out attempting the front end of a double steal before Aaliyah Swan's infield single scored Freijanes.
Escutia led off the CSUN sixth with an infield single and reached second on an error on the play. Escutia advanced to third on a Landeros' grounder to second. Nunez grounded out to short as Escutia scored on the play.
Montoya began the CSUB sixth by reaching on an infield single. Curran sacrificed Montoya to second. Montoya attempted to take third, Freijanes, the second baseman, covering on the play, threw down to Swan, the shortstop, covering third to retire Montoya. Jordan Head lined out to end the frame.
Swan singled to begin the top of the seventh. Carman reached on an error on her sacrifice bunt attempt, allowing Swan to move to third. Lemus singled to left to score Swan. An error by Johnson, the left fielder, allowed Gomez, the pinch-runner for Carman, to come home for what proved to be the final run of the game.
Martinez struck out three, walked one and faced four above the minimum. She posted her seventh complete game of 2022 and now leads the team in wins with eight. Freijanes, a freshman, recorded her first multi-hit game of the year, as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Swan was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. CSUN outhit CSUB 9-4 as the Roadrunners committed five errors.
NOTES
The 10 runs CSUN scored in game one was the most for the Matadors this season…the previous high was nine on two occasions…Carman's three-hit performance was the 11th time this season in which a CSUN batter recorded three hits in a game...it was Carman's second three-hit game of the year and her eighth multi-hit performance…Swan's two hits in game two were her second multi-hit outing of the season…the Matadors have won 11 in a row in the series in a row dating back to Feb. 27, 2015, when the Roadrunners defeated CSUN 7-6 during the CSUN/LMU Tournament.

CSUN (19-28, 9-11 Big West) faces CSU Bakersfield (8-25, 3-17 Big West) at 1 p.m. on Sunday to conclude the series. ESPN+ will stream the game.
