NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Cal State Fullerton defeated CSUN 6-4 to open a Big West Softball series Friday afternoon at Matador Diamond.
Â
Mikayla Carman opened the CSUN third with a walk. She advanced to second on Alexis Lemus' sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a Myka Sutherlin wild pitch. Jaymi Steward doubled in Carman to give the Matadors the lead. Steward went to third on Sutherlin's second wild pitch of the inning before Kennedi Sorensen walked.
Â
Alexia Silvas relieved Sutherlin and hit Sami Garcia to load the bases. Vinessa Nunez worked out a walk to score Steward. Kaylee Escutia popped out to second for the second out. Pinch-hitter Kylie Galindo went down in the 1-2 to Silvas before posting an opposite-field single to left that drove in pinch-runners Ariel Gomez and Mia Cortez. Silvas induced Sydney Freijanes to fly out to right to end the inning.
Â
The Titans' Daisy Munoz led off the Cal State Fullerton fourth with her fourth home run. CSUN starter Kenedee Jamerson hit Deshea Hill before Jessi Alcala singled up the middle. Allie Gardiner relieved Jamerson, getting Peyton Toto ground into a 6-5 fielder's choice for the first out. Then, Alexa Neil reached on an infield single to push both runners up a base. However, CSUN committed an error on the play, which allowed Alcala to score.
Â
Evelyn Sabian, a Titan pinch-hitter, reached on a Matadors' error, scoring Toto. Megan Delgadillo fouled out to get CSUN the second out. Hannah Becerra doubled to left center, which drove in Antuanett Dean and Neil, moving Cal State Fullerton into a 5-4 lead. Alyssa Hernandez flew out to left for the final out.
Â
The Titans continued to lead by one until there were two outs in the top of the seventh when Alcala homered, proving to be the game's final run. Silvas retired the last 13 batters that she faced to improve to 6-2. The Cal State Fullerton pitchers limited the Matadors to four hits, two recorded by Steward. Becerra, Alcala, and Neil combined for six of the 10 Titans' hits with two each.
